after a couple of hours of running the water pump the water in the resevoir tends to get hot how should i control that?

using an external pump helps prevent heat transfer, otherwise an airstone and pump can help a little... but other then that you need a chiller.

I've got a small res, it don't get above 78... The air stone does help a little bit, but it gives O2 to your babies roots also.:peace:

wow, and the pump warms up 3 gals of water all by itself! Amazing! I'm drawing up an aero system at the moment and wasn't aware of the heating effect from pumps- thanks for that. I'll probably make my resevoir bigger to help dissipate the heat.

In the systems that I've seen, the pump is not submerged. It's an in-line pump that is just outside of the res.

For a submerged pump, you could try to cycle it. A suggested cycle is on for 1 min. and off for 4 minutes. You will need a cyclestat timer.

I have a 1000gph submersible pump in my res.My res is a 45 gallon tub with about 30 gallons in it.The pump adds a little heat but not much. I find temps can get up to 78 which is hotter thenthe 70 tops Id like so that by the time it hits roots its closer to 60-65 which is optimol. I run my pump 24/7 but have heard if you have a cycle stat timer that 5 minutes off an hour has benefits but I have never had an issue. I always have a few of those cooler freeze blocks in the freezer. the plastic ones that you freeze then toss in a cooler. I have a floating thermometer in the res and if it gets warm in the room I check the res and if need chuck a freezer block in like a floating giant ice cube. 1 will always do me for the day.LAter take it out refreeze it and ready again for next time..

Thanks for the suggestions, I went ahead saved like four 20oz bottles then freezing them full of water and basically use them as ice cubes like Filty said. Then set the pump on a timer for it to run 15 min the rest for 45min

45 minutes off is too long that will cause root damge. Your better off to run it 24/7 then that route.Just a couple minutes off is the max

I think I might have to invest in something I can stick in the resevoir to keep it cool or fair temperture then. But what kind of thing can I use to perform this task?

If one were mechanically clever, a dehumidifier could be used as a water chiller.

Dehumidifiers are little airconditioners, but the cool air they produce from the evaporation coil is blown over the hot condenser coil. Water still condenses on the cold coil, producing the dehumidifier effect.

If some crafty sod could figure a way of circulating the tank water over the cold coil in the dehumidifier (without it leaking all over the place), it would function as a tank chiller, moving the tank heat into the room air (or wherever the converted dehumidifier was mounted).
