Just got legal.

Hello, I just became legal and I want to start growing my own. I was wondering if I could get some feedback from growers to help me out as to which way I should go, hydro or soil. I want to have two rooms going with a room in which I can do clones with too. I plan on taking on patients eventually too, which is why I want to run a few rooms. I have a room in my basement thats about 10x12 that I want to setup in. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
-Kyle

Hey there,

i have no tips of my own to give you (still learning myself), but I do want to congratulate you on getting the permit.
Grats!! :weed::weed:

this is hydro and it is 55 days from when I brought them home as clones, June 22nd. Soil cant touch my growth and yield but soil has me in flavor and soil IMHO adds a bit to the tippy top when smoking a nice sativa, But soil cant touch this...

Is that from one single clone doing the scrog method?

check out my signature and you can see my whole grow journal, and these were origianlly 12 clones of OG Kush and I had to let some go due to root rot.

yes watch every growing video you can find on youtube! the next few months youtube and study every step of the growing process starting with growroom setup id guess. and you are lucky! damn im jelous! the guy has 2 growrooms planned! shoot im lucky to grow in a box! cant do it now though maybe in a few yrs i dont trust this place yet with renting and all. enjoy man there is nothing more beautiful than a marijuana plant!

I don't have time to study, which is why I wanted to get some advice from the vets on here. I'm still a noob and need to learn alot. But the best way to learn for me is hands on, and I just got paid so I want to get this setup as fast as I can. (I was thinking within the next week)

soil could definently touch that.my plants are much more beautiful.if i were you especially being a noob go get.
fox farms ocean forest potting soil
perlite
fox farms trio nutrients (grow big, tiger bloom, big bloom)
go get 400w light from www.discounthydro.com i got a lumatek but a next gen would be sweet to.and get the cool tube its worth it.
stanley blower from wal mart(kinda loud but your legal and SUCKS some fuckin air for 45$,look around for threads on easy mods for it.)
carbon filter is optional in your case i would love to stink up the place
growing area.(i use a huge wardrob cabinent from big lots but its alot of work,id prob go with a tent next time around)
get some Daylight Flouresnt lamps(CFL'S or Tube is fine) for your veg area(clones, baby plants, mothers)
some 5 gallon pots for flowering and just 16oz party cups for clones and yound plants.
wait 3 months.
GET HIGH AS A MOTHER FUCKER
and id recomend attitude seed bank to any one ive had 2 succesful orders through them.and order during a newsletter special for amazing deals.

this is the cheapest EFFICIENT way to get goin quick.trust me ive tried numerous fans, soils, lights, nutes trying to save a buck and they dont work.gotta chunk out atleast a little bit of change to do it right.
good luck,god speed

Okay so what i've figured out so far, no matter what I have to get Fox Farm Ocean Forest, and maybe cut it 70\30 with Light Warrior. (Any thoughts on that?)
And, Fox Farm trio Nutrients (grow big, tiger bloom, big bloom)
Some 5 gal buckets

But i'm doing two rooms, one veg, one flower. So what would I need to setup these individually? obviously I can't run the same light for veg\flower if I have two rooms, so along with have a 400w Hps for veg, what would be ideal for when I switch to flowering? And when I switch from veg to flower, should I change out soil too? or just move the buckets from one room the other? Also, I want to make something so i can have a constant flow of clones in maybe another room, or maybe inside the veg room. Any ideas?

I'm a bit new as well but may be able to interject an intelligent comment.
Ocean Forest and Light Warrior mixes vary. The main reason for this is that Ocean Forest is just a little bit "hot" for some strains and seedlings/clones. I've seen 50-50 do quite well. The thing I see you missing is the Perlite. It's really not an option for well-drained soil. If you omit the Perlite you get....well......poorly-drained soil, overwatering headaches, etc. Perlite is your friend.

HPS lights can be used for vegetation but are certainly far from ideal. HPS excel in the flowering stage. MH lights excel in vegetative but t5 flourescents may well be just as good without the high heat and high electricity problems.

First off Rachshow, congratulations on becoming legal.

That being said, you really need to figure out how much money you have to invest into your room and how much do you expect to yield as well as how often. This is very important because with a 10x12 space, you could cut it down to using the bare minimum space with a 400 watt as advised or you could fit 3 1k's on light rails to cover the whole room or even 6 1ks doing a perpetual harvest sea of green which would pump out at least 3 lbs/month minimum in a hydro setup but it would be costly. Like 8-10k costly.

I know that you want to jump right in, but you seriously need to figure out what you want to invest and also how much time you can spend in your garden. I'm going to sub to this thread to see if I can help you out but you've got to give us a budget to work with.

Peace out and happy growing

I have about 1500 us dollars to use for now to get it up and started, so really I just want to get the bare minimals than gradually upgrade as I start harvesting and what not.

For soil, I was thinking 70\30 70 being FFOF and 30 LW. with the perlite do I just add that in the soil?

Now for lighting, I was thinking like 1000w mh for flower and 600w hps for veg, any complaints?

EDIT: I have all day everyday to spend in my garden. This is what I want to do, become a caregiver and get some patients.

Yep, just add perlite to the soil....a lot of it.

With respect, you still have your MH and HPS backwards. MH for vegetative....HPS for flowering...

Good luck.

First off man, congrats for becomin legal.

To start stuff off I would use a Metal Halide (MH) or a T5 fluorescent system for vegetative state. It's all a matter of budget and preference between the two. With a T5 system you won't have to worry about ventilation as bad as you would a MH system. For flowering, of course use a HPS light. I'd start off with a 600w like you planned. Have you put any thought into what your are going to do with the walls? Being they are so big I would just paint them white instead of using mylar wrapping. Either way you need them to be reflective.

As you are on a $1500 budget, pick up a convertable Xtrasun Ballast for less than $200, invest in a good hortilux hps bulb and a simple reflector. A little stretch from an hps bulb in veg will be acceptable for a first grow. Should cost you about 350 to 400 for your lighting needs. Pick up some cheap polyfilm and line your room, floor and walls. You want to do the floor just as an added protection against water damage.

Quantum Infinite Breeze is a fantastic fan that not only oscillates side to side but also up and down in a W pattern and can be had for less than 60 bucks. That will allow for all of the air movement that you'll be needing.

You mentioned that you will be growing in a basement so, can you vent outside? or do you think you'll be using some type of portable AC?

You're more than welcome to do the FF soil but you could easily setup an Ebb and Flood 4x4 table and stay in your budget. Just use General Hydroponics FloraMicro and FloraBloom in a 2 part bloom to 1 part Micro setup.
5ml/gallon micro 10 ml/gallon bloom during Veg.
8ml/gallon micro 16 ml/gallon bloom during Veg.
This is known as the Lucas Formula and it works very well from experience.

Also, to stay on budget, you may want to look at an ozone generator as opposed to a charcoal filter Fan combo. I'm using the OZN-1 generator from CAP that I was able to buy locally for $140.

Your shopping list as I see it (prices from Hydrofarm catalog. You can get cheaper):
Xtrasun 1k convertible ballast $209.95
Aluminum Wing Reflector $41.95
Eye Hortilux 1k Super HPS $119.95 (Do Not be cheap on lighting. It's like putting cheap gas in a super car)
CAP OZN1 generator $139.95
Quantum Infinite Breeze Fan ~$60
Polyfilm or Mylar ~$50
2 cheap timers from Walmart ~$15 (Make sure they are 15 amp timers for safety, also make sure they don't have lights on them as they will interrupt the photocycle)

As you're legal, I would assume that you would have access to clones. Clones are way easy to start with and you don't have any seedbank shipping time or hassles and in addition, you've got a jumpstart on a proven phenotype. You should be able to pick up 12 for $120 to $240 depending on quality and root development.

So, start with that and figure out which route you want to go between soil and hydro.

Hope this helps you.

EDIT:
Use the aluminum wing reflector if you have enough geothermal insulation from being in a basement. If your basement can't maintain temps, go with a ducted reflector. Also, try and dedicate one breaker to your ballast use and use a second breaker for all of your fans and such so you don't overload anything.

That helps even more than you'll ever know. And I was doing some research, and I was thinking I should do two different flowering rooms, and a veg\cloneing\mother room. and In one of the rooms I wanted to try out a scrog similar to this
And in the other flowering room I was thinking about trying soil just so I can compare between the two so than I can pick from which method I will be doing for my second grow.
I already have one 400 hps that my cousin just gave me. so I figured i would do two flower rooms sense I already have one light and have the space to do it.

Do you have any thoughts on that?

6 screws + bone graft = NOT lucky.

That sucks about your accident and congrats on taking advantage of the situation. This early, I can't really give you any tips that others haven't already but...Do your research and get lots of practice. Have fun!

If you were considering doing a Scrog, you could very easily purchase a light mover for the 1k and use it to cover a 4'x8-10' Scrog which would yield you some serious weight. My other thought for you for maybe your next grow since it might break your budget, would be to setup a light rail with a 1khps, 400 mh, 1k hps over a 9 or 10 foot by 9 or 10 foot area. Although the 400 would barely qualify as supplemental lighting when set next to 1k's.

As far as doing 2 flowering rooms, that really wouldn't make much sense unless you were going to be using some kind of flipflop system for your lights so that your ballast would light 2 bulbs for 12 hours each. I really think the 2 flowering rooms though is ill advised though, plus I'm pretty sure that Scrogs stay in the same room from veg to flower for about 99% of growers. If you got a light rail for that 1k though over a 4x8' area, you could easily pull 1+ lb your first grow. If you nailed it right you could exceed 2 lbs but that's unlikely for a first timer. Personally, for the first 2 harvests, I would scratch the idea of multiple rooms and just focus all of your time and money into perfecting one.

Just my $.02
