Jiffy Pots

I have heard many horor stories about jiffy pots. I have also read some people swear by them. Does anyone have any experience with jiffy pots in a bubler bucket. Was there any problems encountered?

I've used Jiffy Pots in hydro and soil, and I've had nothing but problems with them. Specifically, the 'netting' which provides the Jiffy Pot with its shape does not break down well and may cause your plants to become rootbound before they've even had a chance to take off. I tried cutting the netting off, only to find that the roots were damaged in the process. I've had them fall to pieces in hydro setups which in turn messed my plants up. Also, I've heard from various sources that the peat moss used in Jiffy Pots can harbor dormant pests, though I cannot confirm this from my own personal experience.

After my first bad experience I was buying them at Wal Mart simply because they came with that nice little humidity dome - and they were very cheap, at $1.50 for ten Jiffy Pots and the container - I'd just toss the peat pellets and use the container. However, I've since decided it's even more economical to get nachos at Taco Bell. Eat the nachos, then use the container they came in as a humidity dome for germination and seedlings.

Thanks. I saw them yesterday at walmart when i was there and wondered if they would be suitable to use for a bubble bucket. I guess I will use trusty rockwool and hydrotron pellets. Any idea what nutes would be best for a first timmer?

There are a lot of nutes to choose from, but one bit of advice I'd offer is to only purchase nutes which are specifically engineered for hydroponic applications. Just because a nutrient comes in liquid form - Miracle Grow Liquid Concentrate comes to mind - does not mean it is necessarily going to be good for a hydroponic grow. General Hydroponics and FoxFarm brands are fairly easy to find (if you can't find them locally you can always order them online). GH nutes are pretty reasonably priced; FoxFarm can be a bit on the spendy side, in my experience. It really comes down to experimentation and finding what works well for you.

When using 2-part or 3-part nutes (nutrient solutions which come in seperate bottles and must be mixed in your resivoir) be sure to follow the mixing directions to the letter, otherwise you stand a good chance of frying your fragile little plants. Never use full strength nutes on seedlings; always use 1/4 to 1/2 of the recommended amounts for vegetative growing.

Avoid jiffy pots like plaque. Like he said they dont break down they root bing they cause root rot and many other issues. If you need something get rockwool cubes. And yes get specific nutes I suggest Fox Farm 3 stages.Grow Big, Tiger Bloom, and Big Bloom

Thank you all.I have decided on the rockwool and hydrotron for my substrate. I have also chosen to go with fox farm grow big and bloom. Will ~3 gallons work to take three plants thru veg? Will I have a very hard time seperating the plants when I flower?
Note: I will be vegging for about 4-6weeks as I will be topping and LSTing due to height restrictions.

Thanks again for all the help!:joint:

Hey don't forget about Rapid-Rooters, they are a bit more expensive then rockwool but I find that they help establish a better root system and are ready out of the box, no need to soak in PH adjusted water etc.
