I've never defoliated but this time.....

I've never defoliated before. In fact I'm usually the one that is opposed to it most of the time. But in this case I'm tasked with growing 4 plants in my 2x2. Normally not a huge problem but the fan leaves from these cultivars are huge. So I could use a bit of guidence. How much of this stuff should I chop? These plants are 4 1/2 weeks from germination and I'm planning on flipping them in about a week. Theyve been topped once about a week ago but the fans are blocking pretty much everything. How many of them should I take? Chop chop!!d9 1-2-1.jpgd9 1-2-2.jpg

1. I'd flip em now. Save the energy.

2. You can probably take as much as you'd like and they are still gonna fill that tent and turn it into a jungle.
Its definitely going to be a mess either way. haha

We shall see. The only thing that concernes me is that these plants are giving me hints they may be very large. Its a test grow and I have no idea what the lineage is other than I can now see they are indica dominant. Those huge fan leaves are giving me concern though. Its going to be interesting to say the least. Heres actually a shot of my last four plant grow. Exotic genetix. These where pretty manageable. Notice the difference in size though compared to the ones i posted above.

Are you popping beans or acquiring clones?

I never quite understood the benefits of running multiple plants in small enclosures. If you mainlined and scrog trained just one you'd be filling that tent easily. All while saving a little cash on one bean. Area wise its the same gr/m2

Scrogging and training takes a long time, I like to cut my clones and flip quick. Here's 4 mother plants flipped in my 4x4 vs 16 single colas.

I could grow way more single colas, I just don't need that much weight. Also makes trimming, drying, and processing more simple. The mothers were as close to a Scrog as I plan on getting, and it was a pain in the lower back lolipopping and defoliating. I also get more bud per square inch of height, which is important to me since my hydro set up takes up the lower 3 feet of the tent.

Obviously Scroging has incredible results. I would never say it's bad or advise against it, it's just a trade off that doesn't suit my impatience.

I live in the don't remove fan leaves unless you need air flow or have a specific reason camp. I'm sure I'm in the minority. At those current pictures I'd remove zero of them. As you know, they will self prune. I currently have 4 plants in a 3x3 that just finished an eight week veg from seed under a scrog. I'm sure it'll be a shit show. So far I've only removed sucker branches and fan leaves that were already on their way out.

I can't find the study because I'm at work and my brain is dumb but there comes a point, depending on how much light a leaf receives, where it takes more energy than it provides. I don't live by it either, but there is science to it.

I'll search for that study, I'd be interested to read it. If you happen to remember it or come across it again I'd love a link.

100% Understand!

I've read what you're talking about. Basically it says after a certain point leaves will turn into tanks and begin to draw more than what they provide. Think it was on YouTube I seen the topic and followed a link there

Just a quick comment on these. Haha. Exotic Genetix quikz. I have to say they all came out pretty top notch but very similar. Kind of a grape drink on the front end with some gas. They really smelled great. Top notch? Well...... great smoke but nothing that I would regret not keeping in the rotation (I don't keep mothers anyway). Would I grow it again? Yes, but not any better than any other top tier weed.

And an update. I snipped and chopped about all the big fans off. Figure why not? Maybe I'll learn something along the way. They are definitely more managiable now but I'll give them a few more days than I normally would to acclimate before I flip. I figure If I time them right I can get a good even canopy without having to scrog or wire them up. I like to kind of let things take their natural course if possible. I won't/don't usually like doing this many plants in this small of a space because it takes a lot more.....well lets just say its a big pain in the ass. Ha. However in this situation I popped 8 seeds and ended up with 6 females. The breeder prefered basically that I grow as many out as I could because he was more interested in what kind and how many phenotypes i'll end up with. So thats what I'm going to do. Hopefully I'll keep them big enough to get a good idea of how the phenos are going to be but at the same time small enough so as not to run into too many problems. If it were up to me I would have taken the two healthiest and run just those. But we give the breeder what he wants. haha Seriously though I don't mind running with four. Anyway heres the before and after pics. They dont seem unhappy at all. Maybe I'll keep this thread alive with updates. We'll see.

An intersting side note was that the temperature inside my tent went up an average of 2 degrees since pruning this morning. Gotta love these AC Infinity control panels.
