Issue with furnace, possible hazard. I need quick help

The hole can be cemented over and those connections although only 80% efficient equipment look to be fine

When that water heater initially lights the burner there will be about 60 seconds of CO2 in the room until that chimney warms and begins venting

Not sure what your concern really is

Hold a lighter there with the furnace on, see if it draws the flame, then seal it with some crap you have laying around.

That’s a standard forced air gas furnace that pipe is the pipe that removes burnt fumes from your furnace and house it’s called a draft pipe if it has a simple hole in goto lowes or a hardware store buy a pice of tin or ducting cut a piece to cover hole buy some high temp gasket maker seal around all the edges of your repair and put some machine screw thru it let your gasket set and dry for a few hours should feel like rubber afterwards the turn your heater on if it cycles and runs you are good there are safety pressure switches that will prevent gas flow when the exhaust is not correct but f that happens your smart valve will blink indicating a flow problem if it runs and doesn’t shut off your system is fine make sure you don’t have leakage out of your repair area place a co detector at your steps to basement or above your heater that way if you did have any leak you would know immediately but more than likely you won’t source 25 years of hvac installation and service

It looks to be the cement chimney and in all likelihood they put a steel flexible liner in that

Can I just put a paste over pic 3 to cover the hole?? The hole may have been there before i don't remember. I have carbon monoxide detectors in my house and they never went off.

Your fine cover it and seal it you won’t have any significant changes in air quality that you or even a meter would notice

Yeah its like a caulking or plaster.. Can't I just recover the hole with some type of caulking or plaster??

I don't remember the hole being there, I can't remember... Are you an hvac person?? What can I cover the hole with??... I have carbon monoxide detectors in my house and they never went off.

I wouldn’t you can fix it for less than $10 properly

I gave you a clear explanation on how to fix it and comment number 23 it would literally cost you may be $10 and you would have access to materials leftover

I am an HVAC technician 25+ years in the field and I can tell you with 100% certainty that a draft pipe is not just aesthetics it has a major function with your furnace and the safety of your household you could easily patch that hole for under $10 all of your materials can be picked up at any hardware or Lowes or Home Depot store or even Walmart tin ducting gasket material and some tap cons 15 minutes of your time and your problem is solved

Maybe you see something I don’t but it just looks like someone slipped some form of insulator in there

My bad man I thought you were talking about a hole in his ducting for his draft it’s really hard to understand what he’s even asking I thought he was saying he had a hole in the pipes that he was showing us in the pictures which are your draft pipes for your CO what is the hole actually in

I don't have nothing to worry about as long as carbon monoxide detectors don't come on right??

Sorry I just got a hole in the stack or chimney whatever it is... Not sure the hole was there before I can't remember.

Why is it just aesthetics?? I've carbon monoxide detectors don't go off I have nothing to worry about right??

Obviously you are leaving something out here is that hole in the steel a piece of wood or concrete?

Yes and no CO detectors are met to detect minimal levels of CO but that’s if you’re on top of your batteries at all times and you have them spaced and spread throughout the house properly if I were you any hole related to my furnace be it my air supply for my house which I would want to patch to have a more efficient heater and AC unit or be it a hole in your draft ducting which like I said before you would want to patch to prohibit the release of CO into your house
