isolating roots

I have this stupid idea to grow a plant with the container in the basement and the plant growing through the ceiling into a room on the first floor.

No, this is not a stoner moment, not high... I wish I was because this is just silly. But it seems soooo simple...

Otherwise I'm thinking about the plant container inside a tub. That tub gets intake/exhaust.......
....This is now beginning to sound much better than the former idea lol.

What would be the real benefit here? Am I just trying to replicate one of my old hydro setups with the rez out of the room?
What would this extra level of complexity get me?

Your thoughts? (please be nice)

Heh, I didn't mean the container on the basement floor.... Elevated near the ceiling of the basement so a 2' pruned plant can poke through.

I'd lean towards moving a heating vent rather than a 2" hole in the floor.

Notice I'm still considering this.

Ive thought of something similar. Cut a square hole in the 2nd level floor/1st floor ceiling. Most houses are on 16" centers, so your gonna have a box around 2' wide by however long you want after adding in bracing, if you only remove 1 section of joist. Triple up whatever sized your joists are to support all that dirt weight. Build a steel box that fits snugly in your new hole, with a 3" lip all the way around so the weight is adequately supported. Make the box 12" deep. The part that protrudes through the bottom could be trimmed in wood and disguised with a light fixture.

So now you've got a 12" deep planter flush with the 2nd level floor. The room its in upstairs will dictate what type of cabinet you build around it to hide it. Unless your somewhere legal, then you could just have a garden popping up through the floor :blsmoke:

lol, I just pictured some big monolithic box, thats not movable, humming in the middle of the room and honestly I can't find a good "cover story" for that one. Put some curtains on it?

With a hand written sign that says "Not Pot" hanging on it :bigjoint: I was thinking a custom built aquarium cabinet would be cool, or a custom built bar in a party room. Ideally it would be in a closet and you just lock the door. I was considering it for height saving reasons. My loft is 6'6" at the highest, and 5'6" at the lowest. Would be ideal for me to grow in the short ceiling height area of my loft, im 6'2 and I hate hitting my head on the ceiling

I have thought about getting the jack hammer out on the basement floor, pound out some spots, dig down, run plumbing for six tree DWC sites that are plumbed and ran inground, reservoir, all the sites and return lines are buried and like 4 inch PVC pipe runs lol. Then you get the plants down at ground level to save vertical space and you get the earth cooling of the nutrients. Fill in around the works with gravel and finish the concrete back out nice and flush. Heck all the sites could even be concrete like a pool and coated with that koi pond liner. Of course, that actually WAS a ridiculous pipe dream lol.

I slept on it... this would just be a fun project. notgonnadoit

I think the ventilated tub method will do just fine.

TY all for the input!
