Is this the start of root rot?

I'm trying my hand at DWC and have started all my girls from seed. I am using a 2ga tote for the seedlings before moving them to their permanent homes. My water second change day is just a few days away and so far everyone seems happy in there. The growth rate of the seedlings in the tote is almost triple compared to the soil girls next to them.
My question though is if my slightly brown roots appear to be root rot or if it could just be discolouration from the "Floralicious Plus" that made my soup pretty dark?

What are the water temps? keep it below 68f/20c

Ok so I wanna start dwc I got my buckets my stones or pebbles as they call em. And I got my water the reverse osmosis kind. So what nutes man?! I don't want root rot so please don't lead me astray. Someone help

The roots will take tue color of the ferts. Stay the xourse.

Feel them for slime...

As Pecker said, keeps your temps down, also treat with H202 or something similar periodically and you should be good!

Thanks for the reply guys. I have been adding some concentrated h2o2 weekly at each rez change but have since learned while researching root rot last night that the h2o2 is only effective for a day or two. So I'll be picking up some hydroguard or Aquashield and some SM-90 to add from here out. As for temps I believe that could be the culprit as my little seedling bubbler sits under the lights all day long with no chiller, for my big system I have a Rez that is external to the grow that will be chilled, so I'm gonna have to change the girls over to the big system sooner rather the. Later.

Moneymike31, to answer your question its all about preference and experience. Personally being new to DWC I've chosen ease of use and went with the Flora series performance pack from GH to get me started. Before you put plants in the new hydrocorn you bought make sure you rinse it all extremely well then soak in ph'd water or you have a hell of a time with ph spikes.

Ive seen vids of people using h202 and both ph up and down. What does h202 do? Should I buy those as well?

Root rot for sure. Your leaves have a curved structure indicating they are not getting enough O2. Not getting enough O2 because of the root rot or root rot because not enough O2? Doesn't really matter. Good chance your rez temps are too high. Warm water does not hold O2 as well as cool water. If not rez temp, you have clogged or inadequate bubblers. H2O2 will kill off the root rot a little, but until you get to your root cause (punny?) you'll keep having issues.

I'm 100% certain that the issue was heat, I currently have 4 4" disc air stone in a tiny 3 ga home made bubbler. So there is plenty of air being pumped into the water but I definitely failed when it comes to temps. I've added sm-90 and frozen water bottle to the mix to hopefully kill the rot and cool the soup enough to keep it away...

On a side note, apparenntly Hydroguard is not available in Canada and because of the re-release of Hydroguard they have removed Aquashield from the shelves in Canada...So I'm hooped in the Beni front and so far haven't found a decent replacement...I'm using the GH-Flora series so I could stich with GH and use their Sub culture product but from what I can read so far it's an sub par product compared to aquashield and a lot more expensive...

Moneymike- H202 is just hydrogen peroxide but the stuff you buy at a hydro store is usually food grade and 10x more concentrated. It's a good idea to use this to sterilize all of your buckets and rocks, adding 2ml/gal of your water is beneficial also. Some people recommend bleach to clean your stuff with but any plastics unless specifically stated will absorb some of that bleach where the h2o2 will just break down. You also most definitely will want ph up and ph down as you have to keep your solution ph'd around 5.7 in order to keep the plant up-taking nutrients.

I give it a look, the Rez clear looks to be doing what the SM-90 is doing, the tea is what I'm interested in looking into deeper. Hydroguard seems to be the most widely accepted product, I had my mind set on it so now that it's not an option my OCD is going to keep making me think that any other product just isn't as good.

You need a better air pump, you need to oversaturate the water with oxygen. I found Nebulizers to be the favorable. Cheaper and produces more oxygen faster. I've used a 200$ fish pump and got the results your getting, switched to Nebulizers for about 1/4th of the cost and I'll probably stick to nebulizers lol.

I would consider switching to a nebulizer, *my opinion*

Also keep the temp of the water/nutrient mix in your reservoir maintained around 72 F

you do need lots of air and NO light leaks anywhere ( clear tubing ) for one,, around holes cut for pots

That's right.


Also, doesn't it look like there is not enough water in that DWC bucket. The water level needs to be at least halfway inside the mesh pot of pebbles.

water level go's about 1/2" below net pot

in my past 5 gal DWC I did 4 plants at once in the 1 5gal; outdoor, 3gal of water, nebulizer raised it so much it was wanting to splash out through my clay pellets. Strong. one hose 1 air stone 1 Neb, enough to power at least a 55gal reservoir and maintain 18 ebb & flow plants in 3.5gal buckets
