hey man, noob here. i guess you can't PM on this site?
is that all you're going to need to make your own lights? (14) 2ft strips for $69, xlg 200 driver $20-$50 ( there are so many i wouldn't know which one to select), and couple bucks for the U channels, and couple bucks for hanging cables. damn i guess that's all the HLG kits come with so yeah thats about it. that's about $120 usd.....would building one be a better option than getting a 240w from alibaba?
If you were trying to make a similar light output wise to Alibaba you would use a 240 driver rather than the 200.

Strips vary in price, output, voltage ect so you need to understand the basics first so you can match drivers.

I would suggest having a look at ledgardener's site , he shows lots of strip builds and other LED builds but he explains the basics , also look up growmau5 on youtube and look at his early 7 part series , though some of it might not be as relevant but I would specifically look at his vid on drivers. That will help you understand how to match drivers to strips.

It can seem complicated to start with but yes its pretty simple stuff.

The beauty of strips is you can get a much higher performance for less cost and you can run them in height restricted areas easier.

LED gardener has many examples on his site so you can see what the common options are.

You may not be able to PM until you have made a few more posts, but if you want any help you can just @ my username or post on my profile and I can work out the exact details for you.
