Is This Enough Light?

I'm planning a very small SOG grow, only 12 plants flowering at once. 3 plants harvesting every 2 weeks. I'm just growing for personal use, so I don't need or want a ton of plants growing. With that said, I'm planning to use 1 Black Dog Platinum XL-U 750w light in a 4x4 gorilla grow tent.

If I only veg for max 2 weeks and then lollipop them, then throw them into flower, will this be enough light?

Just get a digital dimable 1000 with an air cooled hood be sure to have a cf and id do fewer plants harvest 1 a week make em a bit bigger

Hey I love seeing LED growers. I have yet to try it but have read and read and read on LEDs. And they are very good for growing threw veg and bloom. Some panels or UFOs on the market are cheap and dont work as well but if you get the correct wavelengths then your good. However I do have to say that I would never spend 1800 bucks on a grow light. For that much money you could buy 50 of the smaller one that still do the same job.

I planned on here in the future vegging with LEDs and flowering with an HPS. They veg well then I might end up a full LED grow. But off a panel that I made myself so I can pick my wavelength and design to fit my grow area.

But if you did change and go with a HPS/MH I would do like Dannoo93 said and get a 1000 watt dimmable and it would cost you a 1/4 of what that XL would. But for the 4x4 area or tent size. I would veg and bloom with the 600watt setting. 1000 watts is more for 5x5 or bigger.

Just my thoughts that is all.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm pretty set on going LED, just because the up front cost isn't a big issue for me, and I'd rather have the benefits of less power consumption and less heat. This guy here has some amazing buds with the black dog light: https://www.rollitup.org/led-other-lighting/747251-method-7-led-glasses-black.html

That thread and others I've seen using black dog lights made up my mind to go with them. Plus, while it might do a similar job, I don't want to hang 50 lights, haha - I'm lazy! The guy in that thread I linked above has his plants in a 4x4 tent with the same light I'm planning on, so I'm thinking I'll be good. I might bump it up to a 16 plant SOG grow, because it looks like he has more than 12 plants in there and doing fine.

I'm not too versed in lighting outside of HID, but I would assume 750watts of led in 4x4 would be appropriate. I use a 1k HID in a 5x5 and it's about as small a tent as I would go for this particular light. If LED's are as efficient or more efficient than HID at turning watts into lumen then I'd say you have a good amount of light for 4x4=46 watts a square foot. Then again the 50watts per square foot rule may only translate to HID. I read into LED's 5 or 6 years ago and it was overwhelmingly a negative reaction with a few suspicious successes. Seems that is changing though, which is great. The HID is wonderful, but there is something inherently brutish and archaic about it.

Do you know anything about induction lighting? I've seen some positive stuff on that, if start up money wasn't an issue, definitely something I would consider myself. They're sort of like suped up florescent tubes that are charged by electromagnets, never need to change the bulb..but for all I know you already know plenty on that subject.

Additionally, I would think if you had a sizable budget from the start, you would want to get the most powerful light that would comfortably hang in your tent, especially because you wont have to cool off an HID monster. Do they make anything bigger than a 750 watt LED rig?

I wrote all this and then did a little googlin, it seems that the led's will be equivilent to a higher wattage "normal" bulb, i.e. 1100 watts is equivalent to 1200. Considering that I would have to say personally that a 750watt LED rig would be sufficient for plants in a 4x4 area.

Thanks assrabbi. I'm not familiar with induction lighting, myself, so I think I'll look into that a bit. I'm not very experienced at all with all of this, as I only started researching heavily a few days ago. I'm trying to plan my first grow and I like the idea of SOG because of the frequent, perpetual harvests. I don't think I've seen anyone hang more than one 750w LED in one 4x4 tent, so I think you're probably correct in thinking one will be enough. I don't even think 12-16 plants will even fill up a 4x4 tent grown in SOG style, so even the single 750w might be overkill - but I'm fine with that if it means just bigger, frostier buds, and not hurting the plants? :blsmoke:

Definitely look into induction, seems like the next step in lighting. Check out adding UV to your light system as well. I use reptisun 10.0 bulbs, 10% of my wattage during flowering, so 100watts uvb for 1000watts of light.

Some really interesting stuff about ultraviolet light and marijuana out there, this is a very well known video that sparked my interest in UV, it's about 20min long but really cool shit.
