Is my water too cold for germinating my seeds?

Hey guys, I was just wondering, are the seeds sensitive to temperature when using the water cup method or paper towel method to germinate? Whenever I check the water it feels kind of cold to the touch. I let my seeds soak in water for about 18 hours and they started to crack open so I switched them to the paper towel hoping this will encourage the taproot to come out. Gonna have to wait a few days to see what happens. What do you guys think? Thanks

Also, I only let them sit in the water for 18 because I was afraid to drown them. Prior to letting them sit in the water, I had them planted in damp soil where they were also absorbing water for about 24 hours, but I needed to be sure they germinated. Wouldn't have known in the soil. I'm gonna do away with the soil anyway and switch to hydroton clay pebbles.

Keep them in a warm room. Most seeds (all sorts of species - not just cannabis) germinate around 70 to 75 degrees F

Okay, just room temperature then? They're just sitting in the paper towels right now, on plates, inside baggies. I turned my ac system off completely just in case. How long do you think I should keep them in the paper towels?

my water from my tap is around 50 degrees. I fill up a glass jar and drop my seeds into it and set the jar on my cool granite counter until they crack usually next day.
I water my seedlings and clones and plants when needed with the same 50 f water. I have no growing issues

Okay, just for comparison reasons, when you say "until they crack" do you take them out of the water just when they crack or when they actually have a little tiny root sticking out? Because I moved my seeds to paper towels when they cracked open but nothing significant was sticking out of the seed casing yet.

Also, I appreciate the help ChemPhlegm. You've been replying to my posts a lot. I know dealing with newbies is probably very annoying.

its easy to spot a grower who deserves solid info.
"crack" when I see them open I also see a white root too, so prolly no matter.but they go into rooting media immediately

Okay, and when the seeds are ready to be planted, just plant maybe 1/8-1/4 inch down in the hydroton rocks, then fill my basin with nutrients and start the lighting schedule of 18/6?

I know with hydroton rocks, you have to make sure the root isn't exposed to light otherwise it'll die. Just need to make sure I plant it deep enough. What do you recommend?

I've not used the water method but it seems popular and effective. When I have used the paper towel method I place them in the same room as my wood stove, on a small plate, with a piece of plastic wrap covering the plate. I get good results. I have also germinated them in a peat type medium with bottom heat. All seem to work.
Good luck

I've seen roots grow in illuminated water for months on end, not sure where you heard this

nature doesnt poke holes into the dirt for seeds to fall in for thought.
