is my 400 watt enough??

Hey everyone! I'm doing my first grow. I have 2 plants running veg right now under my 400 watt cool tube system with 400 watt mh bulb in right now (will switch to 400 watt eye hortilux bulb for flower) and I have a 3rd plant same age (all 1 week old) vegging in a different closet under a T5 HO 4ft 4 bulb system with 6500k bulbs just doing an experiment lol. My main question is this- Can I put all 3 plants or at least the 2 under my 400 watt hortilux bulb for flowering and have that light penetrate all the way down those plants since it's just 2 or 3 of them in a 80 cubic foot closet?? or do I need supplemental lighting for the lower branches?? Thanks! Just not sure how far down 400 watt goes

400 watters and below do best with short, squat plants, so some kind of training technique is a must to maximize yields, imo.

LST supercropping is the best, topping is the easiest. If you yield an ounce per plant with a 3-4 week veg period, you're doing very well. Strain dependent, of course.

Two under the four hundred should be alright if you do what smokinrav said with the LST at least. Three might be a tad crowded for that one light. But I think you should probably do better that and ounce per plant though.

I don't think it's possible to have "enough" , it depends on your expectations. If you want pounds, Keep buying lights, and running more electric to the grow location / expanding.

it won't have great penetration with that amount of area.. you would be better off with a 600w HPS or (2) 400w HPS

or you could just get a 2x4x5 grow tent to add to your closet... the 400w is ideal for that space and great for 3 plants in 3 gallon containers LST'd. Veg for about 3 weeks.

CMH would be best. Philips allstart 330w. Higher par(umole/s) than a 600. Higher cri, better spectrum..Runs as cool as a 250w hps. This isn't home improvement. More power is not correct. Better quality lighting is what you want. CMH have longer warranties and last 3 times longer than hps. The 330w. Will match a 600 in yield with far better quality. Runs on a 400 mag ballast.

Do you have a CMH? Or a link to a grow where it out does a 600hps?
I here ya on the RT spectrum,I run a combo of 1ks HPS-MH,and it makes alot of difference by adding the MH to the grow!

I run 4 plants under a 400 watt and usually yield around 2 ounces a plant. I only let the plants get to a total height of around 3 foot that's about max for light penetration.

I had 2 330's but alot was stolen a few months ago. Just barely recovering... Look up kite high's posts /threads for the 330 or tenthirty's posts / threads for the elite agro 315. In the next 2 weeks I plan on grabbing an 860.. I've been working with borrowed lights for the past 2 months.

You would like the 860 allstart... It runs on a 1000 mag. Highest par rated bulb of any type of lighting

This thread is the dna 900 which is the philips allstart 860 rebranded

You can put four plants under that 400hps.

A 400 covers a 3ft by 3ft area you can grow 4 two foot plants under that.

Give them a quarter turn every day and your golden.

And get that one plant from under that 6500k T5 all that’s gonna happen is it’s going to stretch and give you a poor yield.

Optimal veg time is dependant on various factors.

Are you growing short indica’s or tall Sativa’s.

With an indica I’ll let it grow to around 14 inches’ it will grow another 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] in flowering taking it up to around 21 inches.

A sativa can easily double and more in flower, so be careful, 12 inches in veg and then flip it to 12/12 lighting.

You don’t want to exceed 2ft since light penetration becomes an issues after that.

I grow under a 400.
