is it dangerous?

Is it dangerous to have two 42 watt CFL bulbs touching while they are on?

The way my setup is, the bulbs are hanging from a hook in the ceiling from two wires... and they touch.

Is that bad? I don't want them to get too hot and start a fire!

They do not get hot enough to cause any problem while touching . If it was against plastic, wood, cloth and so on then hell yeah I would separate them but that is not the case for you. Just the glass touching the glass of another one will do you no harm. The one thing you are doing is over lapping the light that is let off of the two lights. If you space them out a bit the light distribution would be more even but at any rate I do not think that is a prob. Looks Good to me!!

Tripped me out when i was doing cfl and they would touch and make a humming noise. But yah what he said they dont get hot. Aswell your cfls are pointed down which is not that much light they have to be at a 90 degree angle to make use of the light

You're the only person to ever tell me to put them at a 90 degree angle, and I've seen tons of CFL grow pics where the lights are hanging just like mine...

Anyhow, I had a bunch of people tell me that bulbs touching wasn't safe (you 2 being the only ones telling me it was safe) so I felt a bit uneasy and I rearranged it.

The bulbs no longer touch, they look like this:

if you have a fan on and there slapping into each other. That could be costly

is that a four leaf clover? lol good luck with your grow, and cfl's will never get hot enough to hurt anything.. unless there are 50 in a non-ventilated cardboard box.

That is good you gave them room because your light output is now more even. I have heard many people say that at a 90 degree angle you will get more light. The coil of the light has more surface area than the bottom thus giving off more lumens. You will have the light regardless of what side you choose to turn them too.

Also, If so many people told you it was bad to let them touch (witch it is not at all bad) then why did you create this thread? Only to have to people tell you, I with know how and I assume the other person as well that it would not hurt anything just to separate them anyway. Why not just separate them after your people said so?

Just feels like you are smacking me in the face after I offer you my knowledge......

In any event I wish you the best of luck in your grow.

I made this thread, and nobody responded right away so I asked in the live chat... I didn't make a thread to get an answer I already knew..

i think the whole 90 degree thing is a mis conception with SPIRAL type cfl's, these aren't those straight tubes in which the tips are useless. although there would be more direct coverage with 90 degrees.

Simply look at what side your cfl is brighter on, the one tube on the top vrs the many tubes on the side. Read around this forum and ull see lots of people at 90 - 45 degree angles on all there cfls.
