Britain tried controlling Afghanistan and failed, the Russians tried controlling Afghanistan and failed and we were right there supplying weapons and training to them to fight the spread of red. Then we get to fight the people we trained because of the cold war now in retaliation for 9/11.
You guys to revisit your history and the actually reasons why we are so many places today. I'd suggest starting back at WWI.
We installed Saddam in Iraq decades ago, then Bush's cabinet basically pushed anyone out of the group that disagreed with Rumsfeld or Cheney.
Anyways. All of the politicians in charge during the 60's and 70's were just becoming politicians in the era (30's) of German lie's and start of even more mistrust because of the Munich agreement (American politicians took that as a learning point and vowed appeasement to enemies is not the answer). So after we defeat Hitler in Europe and the Japanese military in WWII we slowly transition to the Cold War. That was our new Hitler and it must be stopped. They must not spread their message because we thought they would try to take over the world with it using unstable countries to gain influence. America's goal is to always make the world "safe for democracy". So we did what we could. Truman Doctrine (Europe), Marshal plan (Europe), Eisenhower Doctrine (Middle East) and SEATO (South East Asia Treaty Organization). The spot light transitioned from Europe to South East Asia where we really mishandled things.
1. Ho Chi Minh actually pleaded for the Truman administration to bring him to Washington to negotiate American help to kick the French out. After WWII we needed France as a Allie against Stalin so to make France happy we gave into their demands that they keep their South East Asian influence. We said no to Ho Chi Minh even after he explained that America was the first country to throw off colonialism and he loved the government makeup of the United States. We said no, a few years later we got into Vietnam.
(side note: the French wanted us to use nuclear bombs on Vietnam)
2. Kim Il Sung wanted to invade south Korea to reunify his country. Stalin didnt allow him to conduct any invasion until there was a mistake made in a speech mentioning all of the spots in Asia where America would defend and the official left South Korea out of the speech. Stalin said alright, its your time to shine Kim Il Sung.
THE GOAL OF THE MISSION IN KOREA WAS TO RESTORE THE 38TH PARALLEL AND NOT TO TAKE THE WHOLE COUNTRY. So when we actually restored the 38th, MacArthur wanted to take the whole country. Truman was being told by his advisers not to go to far north because the Chinese would see it as a threat of a homeland invasion. MacArthur said they would never attack. They did. We then got pushed back and drew out the war even longer leaving a bad taste in our mouth instead of just stopping at the 38th parallel.
(side note - MacArthur wanted to bomb China and made that very public as well as issuing a statement to the Chinese government saying they should directly surrender to himself. He was quickly fired.)
3. Iran - We ousted the Leader of Iran during the Eisenhower administration because the ousted leader tried nationalizing oil fields. Oil prices would of skyrocketed so we changed out the leader. CIA ftw. On top of that you have the whole Jimmy Carter hostage crisis creating a even deeper crack in our relations. (Besides you should be more worried about Pakistan, they have working nuclear weapons and lie to the international community a lot)
4-Hell, we even pushed Castro to Moscow as well.
The fact is that in the failed wars/conflicts the United States has had have been due to a lack of understanding of the people were actually fighting. We are no longer fighting governments that enforce ideology but rather ideology itself. That being said it is extremely hard to change how people live. We learned that from reconstruction of the South after the Civil War. As soon as federal troops left the South it all went back to how it was before at least on a social level. The Koreans and the Vietnamese showed us that "The strongest military in the world" could be taken down by like LBJ said guys in "Black Pajamas".
Once we realized we could not totally eliminate the will to fight in our enemy in both Korea and Vietnam we went to the negotiation table.
That doesn't cover it all but hopefully you guys will get an idea of the fact is we don't just jump into wars. It may look that way but it really shows how little is known about actual American history and foreign politics. The Cold War created an environment of severe distrust and proxy wars that still affect how we live in the world today.
I think another issue here is we seem to end up in a lot of long running civil war conflicts and fighting that has not been settled in the thousands of years they have been going at it. We expect them to change once the see the "city upon the hill". Shortly after we left Vietnam even more civil war broke out.
I could get into the whole China relations thing too. If needed.
