What is a "Starin"? Do you mean "Strain"? Anyways, I don't think ATF is dead nor is Matanuska Tundra. The original Matanuska is gone but the close strain ATF and Tundra are still out there. I've been looking at seed banks.

Ok, I'm not an expert on strain mythology or legend or folklore, but from what I have read, Matanuska Valley Thunder F**k was originally a sativa treasured by locals of the origins name. So if you were to take a look at a couple of the Matanuska Valley seeds going around, you would likely want to not buy any that is heavy on the indica genes.

For example:
http://en.seedfinder.eu/strain-info/Matanuska_Thunder/Brothers_Grimm/
This one is mostly indica.

http://en.seedfinder.eu/strain-info/Matanuska_Thunderfuck/Dr_Greenthumb/
this one is mostly sativa and looks pretty much unbelievable.

Like I said, I'm not an expert. I've read that some seed banks have claimed to have frozen matanuska male pollen in the past and has it still around for breeding purposes, but besides that I'm pretty sure the best you can do is get some inbred line like the one from Dr. Greenthumb. And again, I haven't tried it or grown it before or know whether its actually from that legendary strain, but I want Dr. Greenthumbs seeds really really badly.

Edit:
Then there are things like this. That boggle my mind. If ATF was really a sativa, (which i'm pretty sure it was due to the fact that most indicas are found closer to the equator), then why is this indica?!? Anyone?

I have been growing ATF for about 6 years. Clones were brought to the NW about 12 years ago. Poor picture but a picture non-the-less
I have some about 4 weeks in flowering now and if I think about it I may take a couple pictures (not promising anything)

I was born & raised in Alaska (50 miles from the Matanuska Valley), and have smoked the original from WAY back when (late 70's).
Really, really good stuff.
I got some seeds from an old hippie buddy of mine who left Alaska back in about 1979 who has kept the original strain alive with clones from many generations of mother plants.
I got about 20 seeds left of it, and have grown about 4 of them so far. (Saving the rest of my Matanuska Thunderfuck seeds for when I have a cloning station set up and will be keeping a mother for as long as I can keep her alive & healthy).
Below is a pic of the kola of a Matanuska Thunderfuck after 68 days of flowering (the piece of paper right behind it marked with 1" squares).
It is a long flowering strain and I let it go for 91 days (*had to check my grow journal and date & time stamps of the original pics) and it was still packing on new buds.

The original is alive and well, and would love to try one of the modern Matanuska Thunderfuck hybrids out there some day.
As for the "redneck" name, yeah, ain't it fuckin' awesome?

Yeah, them fuckers get the good shit. ;-)

Here's what the kola looked like when harvested & trimmed at 91 days.
Like I said, they are a long flowering plant, and I know I could have bulked her up even more, but I was getting real worried about bud rot. The kola was solid like a baseball. I hadn't smoked real, true Matanuska Thunderfuck in a long time, and from the first toke it was like going home.
