IP cameras to monitor my grow room

I am planning on using an IP camera to watch my plants when I can't be there. Are these cameras secure? I don't want everyone that has access to the Internet knowing I am growing marajuana.

IP Camera's come in different forms, you can buy cheap low end versions that only run 720p at 1mp, however, through a networkable DVR, due to 3G network bandwidth, the remote viewing is crap, if you go IP camera, spend the money and go with a high end camera such as AXIS, ACTI or MOBOTIX, they offer some HD 1080p network cameras that have on board SD micro cards that you can run directly into an embedded 3G modem router or a LAN and have 1080p live feed remotely inlcuding D1 compression etc. your money would be better spent with a High Res WDR Day|Night analogue camera running an IP POE Balun ( the balun converts the anlogue signal to digital and assigns an IP address making your analogue camera networkable via cat5e/ethernet with RJ45 termination, drop this on your LAN and access via browser or app).

the security on these network cams etc is pretty good, unless people know the exact external ip address, port number and admin login details, your pretty safe.

i don't really understand the need to video a grow while you're not around though tbh.. watt are you gonna do if you see them wilting or getting hungry or something??
give them an e feed or e drink??

just seems like a waste of time and money imo...

Depends upon the purpose, could be security reasons, could be to monitor the system while away, you could add automation and remote control of a relay system to feed or control lighting remotely, it is all dependant upon the requirement at what your trying to achieve, to most yes it would seem pointless, others have the need.

I use them over a firewalled link and also have hour updates logged from my chhc-4 environmental controllers.

I use them as anti thef being that my area is alot of nice homes with tweekers nearby ...
Also I grow very little marijuana compared to the food crops I do so a steady supply of starts us important I once saw my air conditioner had gone out and my sealed room needed a breaker flipped while I was on vacation .
My Buddy fixed it in an hour...
I stared with the free version of " robot benri"
I only mention this cuz it is a good encryped tool with all the bells and whistles ...
Now I use a very cool secret one that I may give out in pm

You can always get a cheap dvr system. Then you just have to forward the ports on the router to the internal ip of the dvr to access it on the internet or mobile phone. Most come with software for droid and iphones.

Thankfully I have done all of the port forwarding and other technical stuff already. I have two foscam ip cameras that I recently added to my home for security, I was just thinking about moving one of them to my grow room. I agree that it may not be necessary, but this is my first grow and I am excited. I just think it would be cool to be able to check in on them from my iphone while I'm at work. It sounds like as long as no one knows my username and password it should be secure. That is all I am worried about.

In my case it would be to instruct the wife how to fix things gone down under...

I have a Foscom setup. I check it once or twice a day from work. I initially set it up while dialing in my tent temps. It really doesn't serve a purpose now. The camera is on the same timer as the lights, so at least I know if my lights came on or not.

None standard port, and very good password.

A VPN "should" give protection even from the Spying Govt.
Virtual private network, I paid $35 bucks for a years service.
When it is running my device is invisible and being bounced off different servers before getting to the Net.
