Ip blockers and Internet security

ok so Ive been reading a couple of threads about people protecting themselves online and all and it has made me a bit paranoid. So I was wondering what all of you guys use as an Ip blocker. I am currently using peerguardian, but i never know if it is actually working.. So any input would be appreciated.

Peer Guardian works pretty damn well and is updated a shit ton. Another good thing is to use FireFox and install the SwitchProxy extension. Find an IP list and use it. Then you're set. Also, if you're downloading stuff through bittorrent then don't seed it after it's done. And don't share stuff on P2P programs like Kazaa, LimeWire, and other such things. If you do that then you're pretty much covered unless someone is specifically looking at your computer grabbing everything that is coming in.

relax man, ip blockers are all just a scam anyway, a hacker (the ones u presumably want to protect your self against) can get past them no problem. Unfortunately that includes the NSA/MI6. Ure better of gettin something like zone alarm, great firewall package, generally keeps ure system safe.

Not bad advice but u gotta remember bittorrent is essentially decentralized p2p so not seeding mean other people may not be able to download it. If everybody decided not to seed bittorrent would be useless.

Probably worth noting that bittorrent uses a different port to web traffic, so you can protect your identity with your web traffic, but leave the other ports (bittorrent, p2p, etc) free to operate as usual with very little risk.

Dude... Not all IP blockers are a scam. Peer Guardian isn't. Anyways, you are right in presuming that most intel agencies can get past it but it still helps. A firewal is a good option and Windows XP SP2 and Up all come with a built in firewall. Some routers have built in firewalls as well. And yes, I know if everyone decided to not seed things on bittorrent that the concept would crash. The thing is, over here in the USA, the number one way they are cracking down on people is by grabbing the IP address of where they are downloading it from. So I'm more concerned about myself instead of just the concept of bittorrent.

i just think people should know this for there own safety i read this elsewhere when checking up about these things this is about another cultivating site i use

1 - the cultivating site is hosted on a FASTHOSTS server. This means that their web site runs on a computer at a FASTHOSTS premises.
2 - FASTHOSTS state clearly in their privacy policy that they will give the police any access that they request.
3 - It would take the police a few seconds to transfer a copy of the database to their own computer to peruse at their leisure
4 - They could do this daily from a desktop computer in their own offices
5 - The database has a record of the "IP Address" of the machine that posts on the forum (the IP Address is the unique address assigned to every computer on the internet, bit like a postcode but with more detail.
6 - Unless you have taken some quite time consuming steps to cover your tracks that IP Address can very easily be converted into the name and address of the person who pays for the broadband.

i use privoxy and tor
Nice. I wish I had a fast enough internet connection so that Tor wouldn't be slow as balls but oh well.

TorPark = God... when it comes to surfing anonymously.

I had to do a project on internet security and in my research I found out that since Tor randomizes the proxies you bounce through and uses multiple proxies in the same session that in order for the police, FBI, CIA, or NSA to actually trace it back to you, they would have to do 1 of two things; 1.) Be looking at your outgoing traffic and where you intend to go or 2.) Have a search warrant for every proxy you bounce through.

I like Tor. :mrgreen::blsmoke:

i advise anyone on these type of sites to use this program, use it now rather than when your sitting in a cell thinking i wish i would have used that privoxy and tor. all it takes is for the police to confiscate servers and such as

Wow lots of feed back. you I know i rarely think about it. I do a have a lot of programs installed.. I do have peergardian but I dont feel its enough. I also have vista so I dont think its working correctly. But you say the Torpark is a good program? My question is. Do these things that allow us to surf anonymously take down our IP addresses as we use it, and watch the sites we go to, like this one? I know nothing about this so bare with me.
