The last place I did was in a 40x80' buildingThere were several rooms but money was tight so we ran just two with 18 lights in each one. The one room had 140 bigger plants about 4 feet tall/5 gal pots and the second room had two beds 8x24 feet long with 240+ plants in the beds. These were diesel and I'd still take that over the bigger plants (although I'd prefer 2 gal pots vs giant beds). Way faster crop time and in the beds watering them was same amount of time.

More mature plants will always produce a better product as the plant has enough time to fully develop but certain strains still produce potent bud even in SOG. If you are legal and not producing a cash crop then long veg/flower doesn't matter.

If you did SOG with 49 per light and say using Diesel 1.25-1.5 with no CO2 per 4x4 so 2.5-3 4x8. If you used a strain like PK you'd have to veg for about 5 days with those numbers.

I've done 64 Diesel in a 4x4 area using 4/3 gallon pots and still got same number as 49. If you are going to do SOG use 2 gal pots I like the square ones. I do like 1 gal pots but you have to pretty much water every days although with that you can bottom feed using flood and drain.
 
Should add a common method in the early 2000's was to do 36/4x4 72/4x8 plants in drip tables. You would use 4x8 coroplast over a 4x8 table with 5-6" net pots and dripper.

They produce a lot less when you look at energy used though. That veg time is killer. It's more something done to get past plant counts than it is to improve yield.

A properly done SOG will always out yield a tree grow though regardless. You have limits as far as light penetration in tree grows and SOG's can produce plants that wind up 2ft tall easily and are basically nothing but bud - all packed in tightly... compared to a tree where you're limited by plant genetics. There's really not any debate as to which is more efficient and effective, but one method leads to a lot of jail time in a lot of cases so it's almost never done.


And clones are mature plants. They are clones (ie; you clone a ruderalis plant and you soon discover that it's still as far along in it's development as the mother plant making the clone effectively pointless unless you're into breeding in which case there can be some limited merit). Your anecdote is leading you astray IMO.

One area where your experience might have caused a distortion is the importance of cloning in a SOG situation. You need to have your game on point, you need to have healthy and happy plants being put into dirt when they are removed from your clone station if you're only vegging for a few days (or not at all in some cases).

I agree, For a pump and dump cash crop a SOG running a drain to waste is hard to beat. Personally I prefer growing trees, as a grower I find it way more gratifiying, there's nothing like walking into a room full of 6-8 foot plants. Running a lower plant count you get to know your ladies on a near personal basis, I've gone as far as to giving my plants names, call me crazy but growing can be a very intimate experience, spending 4 months caring and nurturing a living organisms is very rewarding for me.

I like trees too. No doubt there is something pretty great about what you're describing. But I do look at this a bit like like a business too (one I happen to love) so I tend to grow more medium sized plants as many as my limited count will allow instead of fewer bigger ones. Although they certainly would be bigger if I had more space. The amount of work that goes into a SOG is also quite a bit higher which can be a problem if time is limited.

Outdoors for me the bigger the better. Pretty rare I can see the top of a plant I'm growing outside. The way it should be. I've already got a couple girls going for the next season. Won't be outside until early June or late May. Go big or go home.
