Infrared Thermometers

Just wondering if any of you fine people are using IR thermometers to check the surface temps of your canopy's? If so what temp range are you trying to keep?? As always thanks for your reply's and happy growing!!!!!

I bought one thinking Id use it for that reason. I think I checked it the day I got it - and other than that has been just a toy to check EVERYTHING else. Fun for a bit maybe, not necessary in my opinion (which is based on little experience!). I use one of those wire probe thermometers for canopy temp.

Me too.

lol im using it to check my temps as i lower my air cooled 1000hps to my young plants but id be a lying if i said i didnt know the temperature of every surface of my house lol

I think the problem is that you're measuring a surface and not the surrounding air.

But then again you could point it right at the leaves. So maybe it's a cool toy to have.

Thats what I bought it for, surface temp of leaf. Just seemed to never pull it out to use after day I got it tho.. easier to just look at gauge of probe therm thats always there. In my mind, now, the ambient temp suffices for surface temp. Also, I dont know the technical data - but when I bought it, I remember reading about emissivity (i think thats what its called?). I think its probably fine for a ballpark figure, but I think its accuracy depends on the surface, and what its made of. I dunno, I just remeber feeling like it was only really going to be marginally accurate anyways.
