Influencing flavour?

Just had a discussion in another thread re: some nutrients affecting the taste, in my case negatively. In that thread, I believe a few said it was not possible to transfer taste to the plant using certain nutes. Has any one had a product that negatively affected taste? And if that was true would it not be correct to assume taste could be improved as well?

I am now running H&G aquaflakes and except for price I like the results.
If cost is a concern you should consider JR Peters "Jack's" products. I haven't used them (I use a similarly priced product with organic components for soil). If I were hydro I'd try Jacks. A lot of experienced growers use it, so I doubt it imparts a bad taste.

I've seen government regulatory web sites showing heavy metal content of fertilizers.[1] I assume that's reported because it can end up in harvested product. And, I imagine if a nutrient were really "dirty" like that, you might taste burning cadmium, arsenic and copper, etc.

Hmm, I was just reading up on flavor enhancers today too. The only thing I've used is sugar daddy from technaflora. Not sure if it helped or not because it was a long time ago and since stopped using additives.. But I figure there's new products out by now and was wondering the same thing. The top terp enhancers (from what I've read people have success with) are sugar peak grand finale, bud factor X and terpinator. But I've also read some people didn't like terpinator , but others think it's great. I think I may try one this grow and see what happens. I just want the natural flavor and smells of the plant genetics to be more pronounced and do not want the flavor of the additive in my buds. That's why I've stayed away from such additives for so long, I don't want my kush and lavenders tasting and smelling the same like the additive.

Basically it was the other "long time growers", the same ones that promote Jacks that say it is impossible to impart taste from the nutrients used. I fail to understand why this could be the case. Im not saying you can improve taste but imo you sure can ruin it lol.

I have never noticed a difference in flavor, and have grown the same strain using many different brands of nutrients, also growing outside in soil. I think proper drying is the best way to enhance the flavor.

Yes, why would a "long time grower" know what they were talking about?

By no means am I saying their wrong. Just wanting to discuss why it cant happen is all. All I was told was "nope cant happen", and maybe it can't. Would be nice to have an intelligent conversation about it is all. If it is true then why? If the plant sucks up water and there's something non organic in the water that smells bad, could the plant not absorb that taste? Oh fyi growing for 43 years and I know crap about hydro, and by no means an expert in soil either lol.

I don't think I've ever had a nutrient make the flowers taste bad, but I've heard certain carbs (the flavor enhancers) can make the flowers of different strains taste similar. But that's all I know, I don't have much experience with enhancers.

Curing and properly drying the herb is definitely the make it or break it phase of growing.

I dont think you are going to get any scientists here... but if you think about how significant the effects are of things you put in your body, it makes sense that plants could also experience similar influences from nutes and additives.

for example.. if you eat mc donalds all the time, you will have a weak immune system and no energy and shit a lot. what you put in your body is going to effect everything. live off fruit and your body fluids are sweeter, live off doritos and mountain dew and you will taste like a salty piece of shit.

you are what you eat is a pretty accurate saying. that said... I have not tried sweetners and such so pretty much just blowing stoner theory out my ass.

I guess I kinda worded this all wrong lol. Basically I made the comment that I have heard others here say that a certain nute they used made their bud taste better, botanicare (never used it) being one i believe, and some said it was impossible. With my experience of something ruining the taste I was curious as to why things fed to the plant couldnt affect flavour, all I got was learn botany lol, i just dont have the time lol. Thought it would be a cool discussion. Im not really trying to enhance the flavour and have never used any enhancers either, the product I used was supposedly a bigger bud thing :( but really just tasted bad lol. I actually find I enjoy hydro grown taste more, it seems to allow more flavour out for me anyways.

Well thats kinda what I thought! Like when we added food colouring to those white flowers and they turned colour. Same kinda deal.
