well I was in my fridge and I forgot that I had a red onion cut up into 3/4 and the way I cut them well they started to grow green growth and there's 3 to 5 new green growth on each peace. o_O

My question is, is it possible to plant the onion 1/4s and grow them out for seeds or do they have to be grown from seeds or sets?

With mint plants when they flower how do you know when the seeds are ready to harvest and will the seeds grow to a plant?

Does anyone know if I can grow lawn grass out and harvest it to make flower with from the grass seed heads?

as for the onions, i wondered the same thing to, i had one that was growing in the cupboard, had about a 4 inch growth tip, i did not plant it though cuz one side was rotten. i think if you planted it and kept moist for a few days it could root and take off.
as for the other questions i have no idea, seems like you have alot of cool ideas though

Yea it they would root and take off that would be awsome because you can get a nice massive seed harvest just from 1 onion.

Well I would like to grow as much of my own food as possible because its cheaper and I can get year round crops indoors.

personally i only plant sets for onions, seeds seem to take 2 yrs before harvesting onions. i plant sets in october n let them winter, gives a good start come spring. harvest in may n june depending on variety.

ment is very hard from seed as they produce few viable seed, most mint is propogated by ryzome cuttings. mint is highly invasive n i would never put in the ground.

you can make flower out of any grain, even grass. trouble is grass seed is small n has verry little but husk in the seed. wheat oat n barley were bred to have little husk n more seed if you will, n allows you to make flower without cleaning pounds of seed for enough flower for a biscuit jmo

Got a question for you guys and gals. I was wondering if there is stuff that you can buy that's almost like the gel crystals that you can buy and mix into the soil that will help hold more water in it. Also is it possible to use the gel crystal stuff that you use for candles that you soak in water and use that in the soil to hold water.

ive seen some stuff at fred myers that is a powder and is supposed to help hold water, ive never used it as i dont need to hold more water.
if you want water retention vermiculite will hold up to 100 times its weight in water. not sure about the candle gel crystals though

Thanks. I might have to do some testing with the crystals that you soak in water that are used to put around the candles for decoration.

If you have garlic cloves around you can crush and dice half of one up and put it into 1L of water and lit it sit for a few seconds before you spray. Spray the leafs then take the solution and put some on your hands then wipe the leafs down.

i use neem oil for all bugs, flea beetle are a bitch though, another solution is to buy some pyganic, its kinda spendy but works great. neem is cheap. the garlic idea stated above is a good one to. also introducing good bugs is a great way to control other bugs, i use lady bugs for aphids and mites, and ive seen them attack small ants and some other hard bodied bugs, also preying mantises work great for bigger bugs and hard bodied bugs, and also any regular spider you see will be good in a garden, i got lots of spiders in my garden and all sorts of bugs get caught by them

Hey guys, i'm brand new to gardening and plan on growing both tomatoes and peppers in a DWC/Bubbler hydroponic system.

I've no clue on nutrient mixes that I should use. I bought the flora 3-part system and hoping I can use this as I don't feel mixing my own nutrients completely is the way to go at my skill level. I've read that both peppers and tomatoes need a pH of 6-6.2..well peppers are 5-7. Either way they will work pH wise but my literature says peppers need a fair amount of humidity; upwards of 50%. I think i'll hope they work as I don't believe I can keep humidity this high and succeed with the tomatoes as well.

Anyways, I plan on running a 18/6 schedule for veg and 12/12 for flower like our cannabis friends but i've also read a 12/12 cycle on a MH bulb is best for "green" veggies that you want to bear veggies. I know tomatoes are a fruit, but does this hold for them as well?

Lastly, can someone possibly help me figure out my nutrient mix or should I stick with following the General Hydroponics website calculator?

ok here's some 411

1 - You can use solid plant food that is water soluble and that is 20-20-20
2 - Depending where you live you can get low wattage MH and HPSs that can get as low as 35w and I would recommend using both MH and HPS for both veg and flowering because the plants use both sides of the Kalvin meter for the lights so using both MH and HPS you can get the best results and your plants should be alot happier compared to if you just use MH.
