obama is 100% the result of the republicans' failure to pick strong candidates, but they have been picking the candidates which are the Least Offensive Option to the press for about 30 years now.
bold firebrands like alan keyes, strong conservatives who know and love the constitution are either shunted opff to the "Fringe" and the few conservatives who should be making waves are trapped in the republican party's glacial state and local farm system until they either create a huge scandal self destruct or move out of the political arena and go into business where they are forever tainted by their associations.
meanwhile the left nurtures it's junior members in academia where being a fringe nutbar looney gets you noticed, and promoted, and the bureaucracy where failing is the key to advancement, and making your organization consume MORE resources while delivering LESS of the desired result is Huge Success!!.

The media does play a role, so does voter ignorance. But when a political party who claims to be for protecting individuals rights and limited federal government but does the polar opposite they are going to lose support.
Republicans need to shelve Roe vs Wade, and all the social issue garbage they so love. It's rather ironic when Ralph Nader is more conservative than the chosen GOP candidate. If republicans want some credibility then can end some of the great programs that started under their watch, like DHS and TSA.
