I'm Thinking About Getting A Helicopter

Socata smoker just laid down straight FACTS on this thread!

I love what beardo looks for in a helicopter,
their were no doors so you can't smoke out the cabin and there wasn't even enough room for a decent beer cooler

LOL!!!!

& Socata, is that a personal photo or just one you pulled off the net? I know that you fly in AK, and I see that plane in your avatar.....

It's really one of the most beautiful airplanes I have seen. I would LOVE to fly with you!

I agree, flying a helicopter is a bit more in depth than most aircraft and the places you can go with them is astounding.

Well, you'd need your PPL-H, or Private Pilots License - Helicopter... that'll require around 50 hours of training... and after that you'll want to get your Instrument rating so that you are legally able to fly in instrument conditions and through clouds (without an instrument rating, flying through clouds is illegal).

Once you've gotten your PPL-H and your Instrument addon to it, you'll then need to go and get type-rated for your helicopter... which is specialized training in the type of helicopter you want to fly.

I have no idea of the costs or hours needed for type-rating in helicopters, but there's plenty of websites out there with info on those specifics.

The next big thing is insurance, can you find a company to insure you with very low flying time for a good price?
Thanks for all the good information, Is that all stuff I would really need to do or is that just reccomended or required? What if I just fly it and be sure to stay away from airports and military bases? What if I don't insure it? I figure if I crash the insurance probably wont do me any good anyways. Will they try to pull me over in my helicopter if I don't have a licence or insurance? Do they pull you over in a police helicopter? I just want to get the thing and fly it to where I want to go, am I supposed to be in contact with some airtraffic controll or something while flying? will they be looking for me on radar if I don't use a radio and start wondering what i'm crusing in and where i'm going? Aren't I free to travel? I heard I could fly a helicopter without a licence?

Thanks for the advice I looked at a Rotorway 162F, I think that might be something like what your saying would be easier, It was nice but it was small and underpowered, and their were no doors so you can't smoke out the cabin and there wasn't even enough room for a decent beer cooler
This is a video of the Rotorway that's for sale-he wants $35,000 for this one in the video
I wanted something better which is why I want to get the Enstrom

I dont think just ANYONE can fly aircraft. I know here in canada you need to do alot of school and training. Imagine what the news would be like if anyone with enough cash could just buy a plane and fly. I imagine airports would just be littered with wreckage from jackasses who put in 18 hours playing flight sim and thought they could handle a real plane. Hate to be "That Guy" but it sounds like these may turn out to be pipe dreams my friend. BUT I do hope you do the training and get up there!

i'm far from a pilot beardo, and i'm sure socata will come back and school us all, but i'd think that you'd need to set some kind of flight plan with a local airport and all to make sure that you'd not be flying into the path of some 777 travelling several hundred miles an hour and end up killing hundreds of people in the process, lol..
i've always wondered about things like getting pulled over in a plane and shit as well, lol.. i simply think that they'd wait for you to land some where or follow you to the ground before they go ahead and confiscate your copter, lol...

Maybe I can pick up a helicopter pilot who likes to party at the V.A.? I' know how to fly a helicopter but I don't have any licence to do it and since I can't get a drivers licence, I'm sure I wont qualify for a helicopter one either- I bet I can find a pilot who will work for cheap and likes to get fucked up and just take him with me and shit

Haha, thanks for the compliments buddy... and that is just a picture I pulled off the net, didn't feel like photoshopping out the tail number cause I was lazy and stoned, but here we go... lol

It's required training, there are no shortcuts in aviation and you'll find yourself in a burning crater rather quickly should you try to take any. Regardless if you stay away from airports and such, it's a helicopter, and you must be trained and licensed to fly them, now if you were in an ultralight then it would be a different story. As for getting pulled over, that wouldn't happen usually unless you entered a restricted area but you may get ramp checked by the FAA if people see you acting weird or if you seem to posses no knowledge of what you're doing, they will call the FAA on you.

Hahaha, that's neat... I have a few R/C airplanes, no helicopters though... not very good at flying them :-(

I like that one too because of the cool "slash" through the clouds in the background.

You see a lot of interesting stuff above the overcast skies, hell the skyscapes are one of the best parts about flying, every day a new sky.

spectacular photos... i'm a master diver I know what you mean by another world :)

I'm serious about flying with you! I would be so down.

And guys... if anyone can do it, beardo can.... I doubted that man once, and never again will I make that mistake!

Beardo if you pick me up you can snort my drugs.

I've always tripped balls from the ground looking up, and the clouds look CRAZY..

I would love to see them from ABOVE.

I couldn't imagine dropping a few tabs when we are fueling up! :D

I thought about taking some acid on a 12 hour 45 min flight to Tokyo, Japan.... Houston to Tokyo, one way... man I kind of regret not doing that  would have been MAD trippy stepping off the plane! No body speaks english, and looks at you like the TSA looks at mexicans when I don't know what the fuck they're talking about.. With a look on their face like, "WHY don't you speak my language :? Silly immigrant."

I'm thinking about getting a helicopter, i'm thinking it would be pretty baddass to have my own chopper and I can't get a drivers licence so i'm thinking a helicopter might be the way to go, it's better than an airplane and can go places a boat can't. +
thats like ultimate baller swag shit, what pig will stop u in the air lol unless the airforce but i dont think so

if you cant get a drivers licenses then you cant fly either legally. i know that at least in oregon if you have a suspended or revoked licenses you can not drive anything that is ran on gas and is over 49 cc i believe. like i said i dont know if it is like this every where but it is in oregon

Is it me or does that sound a lot like a challange followed by a green light?
So as long as I can fly it I really don't need a licence or insurance as long as I don't try to land at airports or other places where the FAA might try to infringe upon my freedom- Think i'm going to get high in the sky....
I'm probably going to go to the V.A. to try to find someone who knows how to fly to go with me at least untill i'm totally comfortable.
