Not true. Private transfers are legal.

That's the 'Gun Show loophole' the gun grabbers are constantly yelping about.

I agree. You never know who is on CL.

Could be a thug looking for a weapon without a body on it.

Let's say the thug then commits a crime with it, and is apprehended.

Once the firearm is in the hands of the coppers, they will trace it back to the last person who bought it through a licensed dealer.

If it's you, there's trouble.
That's not true either. Years ago I sold a pistol to a buddy who sold it to a buddy and so on. About a year after selling it I get a call from a detective saying my gun was used in an armed robbery. They caught the guy and wanted to know if the gun had been sold or stolen. Told him I sold it at a gun show to I don't know who and I have no knowledge of where it went from there. He said thanks. End of story.

FFL means Federal Firearms License. and I'm not being rude, but how the hell is it possible to own a legit gun and not know what an FFL is? was it a gift?
in my state all you have to do is walk in buy it they run a quick background check and you walk out with it.
but I do have a friend in federal prison he sold his gun private sale and the dude he sold it to murdered someone with it he had a bill of sale I don't know exactly what they charged him with but he got 5 years in fed prison for it he also got caught with a few pills but it was all about him selling the gun.

To give him some credit, you don't need to know what a FFL is, or have one, to buy a gun.
I know that but every gun store, pawn shop, or sporting goods store I've been to has some form of a notice (i.e. a sign on the wall or a note near the cash register) that states that the business is a "valid FFL dealer". that's why I found it surprising that he didn't know. then again I live in cali, (strictest gun laws in the country, maybe second to new york) so it's nearly impossible to get a gun without hearing "FFL" like a thousand times during the buying process.

that's why it's best to get an FFL holder to mediate the sale even if it's not required in your area. and there's seriously no waiting period? what if it's your very first purchase? and finally, what state? I may move there for a while. lol.

What exactly is not true?

In your case enough time had passed to eliminate you as having any direct involvement.

But the coppers were able to trace a gun back to you because paperwork-wise, that gun belonged to you as far as the government knew.

You made a private transfer, a crime was committed with that firearm a year later.

But the copper came looking for you. They would have known if the gun was stolen because you would have filed a police report.

What they really wanted to know is if you knowingly provided a criminal a weapon prior to the commission of an armed robbery.

You cooked up a story about a private transfer at a gun show. That, and the time elapsed after the sale, satisfied them.

Well, I'm late to the party (story of my life), but I will offer the advice for next time. If someone wants to see the weapon work (not an unreasonable request under the cl circumstances), use blanks. They can see them load, fire, and eject. If that doesn't satisfy them, consder it a robbery and hit them with the gun, take their money, and bolt.

All guns have to be sold through someone with an FFL. Provided the serial number is still on it :eyesmoke:
No they don't, not from individual to individual. Only if you're a, like, professional gun seller or whatever, lol, then you need an ffl. Or if it goes through the mail.

to sell a gun you need a licensed FFL dealer. look them up in your area.

my advice is go to a gun range. if you go to the desert you could get robbed if you dont have a spare gun.

suppose he asks "can i fire it"...you hand it to him...he points it at you and says "thanks" and walks off. not good idea.

No you don't. No FFL needed to sell a gun unless you are a firearms dealer. You don't even gotta ask for ID or nothing (that's probably state by state, but I know around me, an individual doesn't have to ask for shit, just "where's the money?").
