i don't have the major variety, but do have moderate depression/anxiety symptoms
there are some other threads on this topic, quite a few varieties mentioned
i've just started my indoor growing, grew out a nl#5, give its due, it does help with my anxiety issues
seems a bit more helpful the longer i use it, which i find quite encouraging
i do see nl#5 often quoted a being good for social anxiety, it might do that though seems a little strong for social situations

In my experience - no weed helps with depression. If anything, I'd say not to smoke it as it could make your depression worse.

anxiety sure but the depression is probably best left up to the zoloft or xanax. i understand some dont want to use benzo's. i cant speak for how mmj will effect you but i haent found a strain yet to help with depression. aside from the momentary loss of focus on what is underlying the depression issues. just my opinion though. i would say to look for a more sativa strain as they are said to give a more euphoric high wothout the couchlock

Hey Prod1gy!

I've been supplying bud for myself and 3 others to treat symptoms for a mix of clinical depression, anxiety and mania. I'll list some of the strains I've tried and researched and a quick blurb on each. I find that different types of strains help at different times of the day, and for different intensities of sickness - it's good to have a couple of strains - a functional strain and a knockout of reality strain.

Depending on the type, duration and intensity of the depression some strains can start to lift you out in seconds. Other strains may leave some of the depression but give you a split mind where your intellect can examine the depression and the emotional pain without being effected itself. This can take some time if you're not already practicing this, it's a good way to remain relatively functional even during the worst of depressions.

Bubblegum - Serious Seeds: crystal clear euphoric high. Very potent but functional and clear. Tastes like pink bubblegum and icing sugar. A treat, I know it works because I go through it quick. (stimulating)

Kali Mist - Serious Seeds: an up-opiate; nothing is wrong; bliss; cuts through moods and other highs/stones; spice; my favorite strain (my pheno takes 18 weeks, some take 10 but will have different effects) (neither sedative nor stimulating, but you must overcome Bliss to move)

** Kali Mist is like being in the Nexus. From Star Trek the next generation movie where Kirk comes back to fight Sorun. Everything is so perfect you never want to leave, and if you're bending under the weight of clinical depression you'll do anything to get back.

The closest effect I can compare it to is the opiate stone from Percocet, except it's an up-opiate and there's no withdrawl. To cap it off you don't chase the dragon, you ride it. 2 years and the high just keeps getting better and better as I learn to grow and cure better.

I Can't recommend Kali Mist high enough but considering the long flowering period you may be better off starting with two shorter flowering strains and add Kali Mist as a third or later strain, once you have bud on hand.

AK47 - Serious Seeds: soaring high, rocket fuel, non functional. Smells like dead skunk during flower, needs odor control. Will lift spirits almost immediately but the power of the soaring high may cause anxiety if you're not use to it. (stimulating)

Jilly Bean - MzJill (Subcool & TGA): like jeb said, this one is great. High type-Happy, mood enhancing, humorous, energetic; Smells like orange skunk or tang/ Taste so much like Dreamcicles you will not believe it.; Extremely up beat and happy buzz great for depression and bad days. (stimulating)

Pandora's Box - Subcool (TGA): the Cheshire Cat strain; High type- Zooming, Happy, Grinning, anti depressant BIGTIME!;smells: It taste like NL5 to me but its very industrial with a slight citrus taste and a undertone of spice and hash One female has been named Cherry Lethal lemonade. (stimulating)

The Flav
- Subcool (TGA): strong narcotic stone for when you have to check out; mangos. (sedative to the point of narcotic)

Querkle - Subcool (TGA): grape; high type- Indica head and grape taste make it total all day headstash.; smells: grapes, fruit, berries, musty; one of my favorite things to smoke out of a clean bong the flavor is just amazing and IMO better than Mom. (sedative)

Strawberry Cough - (Dutch Passion or preferably a clone from a dispensary): the best anxiety melting strain I've grown. The pheno I had was weak and tasted bad, but melted anxiety like steaming water on butter. I'm growing 4 more from seed to look for a good mother. People review it as a very potent high when you get a good pheno. (stimulating)

Flo - DJ Short: tastes like musky grapes; unique motivating high; my pheno is a very small producer but finishes right on 8 weeks - chopped yesterday at 55 days this run. If you need to get things done while being happy this is the strain. Small producer (uniquely motivating, a must have if you have trouble with motivation during depression)

Big Bang - Greenhouse: a mild sedative stone, sold in Dutch pharmacies for anxiety. (sedative)

You can get all of these strains from Attitude, they deliver world wide.

Good luck with everything, if I can be of any help please contact me.

Prod1gy, (if you're not familiar with this) the timing of the harvest is also very important to get a sedative or stimulating effect. Check out these pictures, great pic-tutorial.

And yet in my state, depression is listed as one of the reasons (anxiety is as well) for medical marijuana recommnedation by doctor.

So your wrong, completely.
These are lies that anti-drug campaigns spread. Are you a popo?kiss-ass

I said "in my experience". So I am not wrong, what your state recommends and what the anti-drug campaigners say doesn't mean shit.

Airwave and TheDude do either of you suffer from clinical depression?

Airwave what strains have you tried that you've found hasn't helped (it's just as good to know what strains to avoid). Is it your depression or someone your supply/know? What weeds worsen your depression? I know that strains like C99 and Jack The Ripper can increase anxiety, a nightmare for someone with a nervous disorder. Maybe there are strains / timing of harvest / curing that change depression effect. Maybe some sedative weeds worsen the feeling of being tired and low. Are you the grower? If you purchased the weed do you know what additives / pesticieds were used, if any. Thanks, important info to me for research.

TheDude what strains do you find help with depression? Does it lift you completely out?

For everyone - Do you take pharmacutal meds along with your bud? I'm on a 5 drug cocktail and the bud, without both I'm a mess.

Thanks all!

just following on the theme of weed and how it affects depression/anxiety
years ago, when bag weed sativa was all i had, and had undiagnosed depression/anxiety
well, some of the bag weed didn't help, to say the least, and made things quite a bit worse actually
on the other hand, there were times when certain bags made me feel HUGELY better
but they were the exception, not the rule
so i blamed weed in general on my fluctuating mood, gave it up for a LONG time
but symptoms did not go away, only years later did the connection get made
and so far, from limited indica experience it genuinely helps, at least for the time being
been a couple of months with steadily improving mood

whatever you do dont take benzos or ssris they are bad news believe me i dont know where to begin on that subject. anyways for anxiety most good indicas work fine and select non-speedy sativa dom plants like blue dream can help with depression. besides that serious physical activity will reduce both physical and mental anxiety more than anything else takes more effort for the result but thats life.

Yeah I take xanax and mood stabilizers currently, the thing with xanax is you build a tolerance fast, and I have been on many anti depressents and they just make it worse imo. So I decided to try mj for medicinal use to get off of the meds. Seems to work with some bag seed but others make it wors to a degree.

Prod1gy I don't know anything about your set up, so if I'm telling you things that you already know please excuse.

If you haven't used a vaporizer I'd recommend one for medical purposes - forget about all the other benifits and all the arguments for both sides of the combustion argument - the high is much clearer and less muddled, more powerful. You get more medicine when you need it.

If you don't know much about vaporizers I could recommend a few in different price ranges.

I've been thinking about getting a vaporizer, everyone says get the volcano. I was hoping to look into a cheaper entry level vaporizer in the 150 buck range, to test the waters before I invest in a volcano.

The Volcano is fantastic, probably the thing that people notice least is how resilient the machine is, how easy it is to clean. If you've got the money this is a great machine. My favorite among the bag/reservoir type.

.

If you want an inexpensive bag type I'd go with the HerbalAire, it's reviewed better than the Extreme.

http://vapenow.com/index.php/herbalAire-Vaporizer-H21-p-84/

.

The other types I have/like are:

Silver Surfer - whip, direct draw. Simple, people love it. I gave mine to a friend, I never used it because of the Volcano. My friend loves it, says he's higher than ever before and uses half the bud of smoking.

http://www.silversurfervap.com/

.

Launch Box - Magic Flight: IMO the best portable on the market. I have an I-inhale (Iolite) that is useless. At ~$90 USD plus a 15 minute battery charger this is 1/3 the price of other portables and could be used as a full time home vaporizer. If you're short on cash this is where I'd start. I can get higher using the LB than with my Volcano, thicker hits. Takes a little more time and a bit of practice but thicker hits. Has a trench instead of a bowl, permanent screen. Conduction between the screen and the powdered bud allows for 3-5 second warm ups and good tasting hits. Uses one AA battery, lasts me for a trench over an hour and a half walk. The warranty: lifetime replacement if the LB is broken for any reason, including operator misuse. The warranty makes sense when you figure out how the box works.

.

Purple Days is a direct draw vaporizer that gives 2-3 good draws per bowl and 40 bowls per gram. Amazing flavorful hits. It stays on all day long, or use a timer - takes 1/2 hour to warm up, and uses about the same electricity as a night light. You can get a battery pack and use it as a portable. Only $180. The catch, theres a 9+ week waiting period. I'm on week 11. If you live in the US you can get the Myrtlezap, the vaporizer that the Purple Days was designed from. Very similar but Purple Days has a cooler name and claims improvements over the Myrtlezap. The Myrtlezap has brass in the air flow

.

Another type is the flame heat source on the heating block, Supreme is the best portable in this class. I bought a cheap plastic housed VP600 that bubbled the first try so I scavenged the ceramic heating tube and made my own Plug n Play vaprorizer with a jet torch, the ceramic tube, a metal light switch box for housing, and the bowl set from the VP. Worked better than the vapoir gene. The Supreme will give you Volcano size hits in the same time, but the unit takes time to warm up.

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!! They cut the guys hand off! Holy shit they're crazy! OH NO! What if they're involved with the Peat Moss Industry!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Everyone buy a Supreme just in case!

sneaks off to buy more Supreme stock

http://www.supremevaporizer.com/

.

I've made a Volcano from an old medtal Vapor Gene, a heat gun, silicone tubing and a Volcano Bag. Like the Vriptec. Which was also the name of an onion belt back in the day, or as we called it the "What is that fucking stupid thing you have on?"
