Hey folks

Im a total noob at growing and trying my 1stish grow right now.I am currently growing 1 seedling of unknown strain in a plastic coleslaw tub in cotton wool under a energy saving bulb in my snakes vivarium.
I have no idea how to post pics but i will try and find out to show what im doing.
Any info will be great.........

coleslaw container? you have got to be shitting me. my first successful grow was in a empty gallon sized coleslaw container.

i think coleslaw is good luck.


btw, how many watts is the light? those energy savers are called cfls... (compact flourescent light) there should be wattage information under the serial number on the ballast(white plastic part at base of bulb)
they are usually power rated, telling you how many watts they use, also see if it says cool white or warm white. you want at least 50w of cool white for veg and as many watts of warm white for flowering.

you have to germinate the seed in something moist and warm. I just use a coffee filter i spray with water and peroxide and put in a tupperware container someplace dark and warm. after 2-3 days youll have a seed with a root. take that and plant it in soil or a starter cube of somekind. i like to put into large zip-lock bag and spary with fine mist then almost seal. keep lights a good distance away to start and temps around 75 deg. F ... 18 hrs on 6 hrs off for veg., and 12/12 for flower... use fans... oscillating, intake, maybe exhaust too... get more bulbs later, either cfl's at the store like 26 watt daytime for veg. at walmart , 42 watt warm bulbs for flower, use y or 3 way splitters to hook them up... last use the FAQ here , tons of info .... im high gl man

wow they woz quik replys cheers folks........as for the bulb its defo a cfl lumineux max full spiral 20w 2700k 50hz bulb.
its kinda my 1st grow but my others failed miserably using different methods to what im using now.
i have posted the pix so how will this work for the time being till i get some cash for better equipment.........but when i get the cash it wont be much.........
how does she look so far?hope its a she neways..........

P.S. i rely hope coleslaw is good look coz i got none when it comes to growing or having anythin t do wiv plantlife......lol

Its taking off... I'm not a fan of the cotton and clear container.. the clear will inhabit the root growth... the cotton, well I just don't like it.... each to their own.. I would suggest that you get another cfl and a Y splitter and put plant right in the middle to avoid stretching, as close as possible..I put mine about 3/4" away.....

you'll want to invest in sum better bulbs. yours is a warm white, because it only has a color temp of 2700k


go to your local walmart and get the largest cfl you can find but make sure you get one thats cool white (5000k) for veg and you'll want warm white (2700k) with as much wattage as possible for flowering.

bulbs.com has an 400watt equivalent cool white for veg that goes for 60$
and the warm white is about 10$ less...

there is no such thing as too many watts, but there is such thing as too much heat, so make sure you have good ventilation, as these cfls will heat up.


i got a 200watt equivalet cool white, and a 200watt equivalet warm white from walmart for about 15-20$. it only costs about 10$ on my light bill to run these, as they only draw 125watts apiece.

i know its a makeshift hillbilly grow but its all i had at the time she sprouted.....wud av died otherwise.i know cotton wool can suffocate the roots but im waitin on sum rockwool and jiffys and also some net pots with clay pellets.......im going to take her out of that coleslaw tub when my other items arrive.
as for the lighting i will try and aquire a different set of bulbs but will these do for now.........what would you recommend for flowering hps or an envirolight?im watching a reflector with flex,fitting and plug as we speak but has no ballast so can you get hps without needing ballast or envirolight all the way?
P.S. i live in uk so no wallmart all we have is b & q

i knw its the wrong color spectrum but i hav pt another 20w cfl on top of my plant and also a shitty 50w incandescent night glo lamp......i knw these bulbs r useless but it is blue and dats wot color u need 4 veg ryt?im jus doin the best i can wiv wot av gt........a little like livin ur life.....lol
some of my items hav arrived today......netted pots,5 of, wiv rockwool inserts, 10 litres of clay pellets and 10 jiffys(or w.e thr calld)
my plants is shootin up btw pretty much to top of tub now.....dats bout half inch in 2hrs.just hope she continues in this way.....if i dnt kill her by acc.....lol

here are some more pix of my grow and the changes made....basically all i have done is placed my seedling into a pete pellet,jiffy or w.e thr calld and place it into a netted pot with some clay pellets on top and changd to coleslaw tub lid(she outgrew it :D) to th bottom of a water bottle and pt sum small holes in th top for air.....if your wondering y thrs clay pellets rnd the edges of the bottle thr jus t keep it in place....
so hw does she look...looks ok t me.
im currently in the process of building a growbox for when she is ready for my new light....i have a few small fans, a small cpu fan,a pc power box fan and 2 very powerful motors frm my selfbuild remote plane(that i gt bored of...lol)wiv propellors attatched.i will post pix step by step...maybe i cud teach u guys sumat....lol :P
any comments and advice is much appreciated...+rep for best advice....cheers in advance

i am planning to make my grow box out of wood or cardboard i dnt knw yet...i av an old wardrobe in my garage that i think wud b perfect but cardboard wud b so much easier and im guessin wud help keep temp and humidity level.....wot d u guys think?

Man, I don;t have any snakes, but I do have lizzards, two orange leopard geckos and two bearded dragons.

You can expect that plant to shoot up tall, and fall over. Your plant is going to STRETCH toward the light, wanting but not getting enough light. Get a cardboard tube, like on toilet paper or a paper towel, and use it for support until it strenghtens.

yea, i will have to try cotton for sure. its cheap, easy to find, holds liquid well, very good candidate for a capillary action hyrdo grow as well.
