You dont need a squirrel cage fan, those are good for moving a lot of air a short distance, like through a wall. The fans you need to push air through a filter are called inline fans. They push air down ducting. The cheap way to go is a 6" inline duct fan, about $30 at hardware store.

your first cheapest bet is an inline 6" duct fan that you can buy from home depot. They dont move much air and cannot push past any resistance.

Second best and most used is an Fantech inline fan which runs quite a bit more but can handle alot of CFM's.

A squirrel cage is typically a blower for larger A/C installations.

Ive tried many inline duct fans and believe me they don't work worth a shit, i would save up the money and get a good inline fan, your lookin at between 200-300 bucks but well worth it...

Get yourself a "Stanley Blower" from Wally-World for about $45.

This thing is a squirrel cage fan, about the size of a basketball and it will blow your socks off!
It probably would. It would also most likely move far more air than the guy's carbon filter could handle. You need to size the fan/blower to the carbon filter or the smell is just going to come right through.
