from what i've herd the oxy generators suk (500$ range)
and you really need a kiln, not to mention a VENTILATION setup
id put the price around 1000$ for a decent start

oxygen generators will barely run the smallest torch.

i tried using vermiculite when i first started and everything still cracks.

you can tap into your homes natural gas and never have to fill a propane bottle again.

a decent starter torch is about $175.

liquid oxygen is cool unless you are in a residential neighborhood. something about venting tanks at 2am pisses off the neighbors.

i have over $2000 invested at the moment and i am only 4 months into this.

sometimes i just read ur threads and u come off cockey. in the real world i know how id handle dat. the knuckle would be inserted . just being honest. and as far as 400 dollars of difference between 600 and 1000 thats a relitive amount. put ur girlfriend on the street for the day and theres ur 400 bills.

ive been blowing glass for well over 10 years. You could indeed start a glass shop in ur garage for under 600 bills. ur not going to need an expensive torch till u can make more than a single blown pipe. that could take some time. the vermiculite would be fine if u dont take ur pieces out while there still warm.. i hightly doubt someone is going to be making two piece hammers right off the bat. hell ive cooled inside out bubblers in a rubber maid tub full of vermiculite, and then i fire my pieces at the end of the week, so u dont constantly run a 220 kiln. as far as the generator is concerned ur right itll only push smaller torches.
and honestly that hammer pipe looks booty, congrats on learnen the art but i wouldnt buy that for shit dog!

I hadnt checked out this thread for a few weeks, I gotta go back thru it now, I dobut you are usin that welding torch still. (?)

The first ones really wernt that bad for your first shot and you didnt even have a kiln so you were kinda just messing around but now they are really getting good.

Just about at the point where you could put it in a shop for production glass. Good job man, keep it up.

Make sure you get Glass Alchemy Glass next time, or there is another good company too. They have really vibrant colors, like spary paint, you will get like, plum purple, safety yellow, kinda type thing.

maybe inhaled too much glass fume

check out this sloppy ass 2 piece hammer i made yesterday. it is my first one and you can clearly see that. the weld is sloppy as fuck. i could have put a bridge on it and really worked that weld smooth, except i royally fucked up and blew out the bowl and the carb before i attached the stem. i went to puff a little when i was welding the 2 together and went "oh shit". oops, maybe i will get it right the second time.

the base is off as well. it's flat but crocked. the colors aren't fully melted in either. the stem colors are cool but the wrap and rake looks like my kid did it. the mouthpiece leaves much to be desired. i need new glasses and have a really hard time focusing on things up close. i know this is no excuse but it does hurt my eyes. i had an appointment at the eye Dr but she called in sick that day. i rescheduled for early may.

i know i really suck at this, but with my whiny attitude and the need to be loved i should be lied to enough to encourage me to continue. thank you all who help feed my EGO, it's a hungry thing.

i catch more shit from "fellow blowers" than any other trade i've ever learned. i thought welders were bad. it seems glass blowers are all threatened by each other. they guard there "secrets" in fear of me or you becoming as good as them and cutting into their profit margin. notice how they all refer to "the worth of my pieces". "i wouldn't pay shit for that." really? i'm more concerned in the fuction then the value. they all judge their work based on what it's worth to YOU. it sucks to see. the dollar eats out the souls of them. go to a glass blowing site and ask for help. you thought we were hard on noobs. wow.
