:leaf: ok my first problem I use Fox-Farm Ocean Forest soil and the soil does not hold water for crap as soon as I feed/water it immediatly runs right threw the bottom and there in 3 gallon buckets and I have to water every other day so is this a good thing or should I do something about it and if so what??

Second: When I feed and water my plant's the soil gets all over the place and where ever the water hits I get big holes in my soil and I kinda gotta grab the soil and put it back around the base of my plant is there anything I could put on top of my soil so that when I water my soil doesnt get everywhere if you get what im sayin.. Thanks for reading and if you can help I would apreciate it!!

Yeah you have good drainage that a good thing. The more your plants get watered them more they get out of it. get a watering can with a light sprikle spout. it will defuse the water stopping tose hole. or you can pour the water very slow when watering

Clay balls??? Damn... that's a great idea!! I'm doing a soil grow too and I've been having the same problem with the water exposing my roots. I just cover it back up but if I had hydroton rocks on top maybe that would help. I think I'll try it with one of the plants. I'll also classify the rocks and only use the largest ones. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm sure you could find a packet of cheap stones from a local nursery, they use them in garden beds alot

hey kali.. i've never heard anyone complain about FFOF, other then saying it's a little too hot for some of their seedlings and cuttings. but, given your description, or lack thereof.. if you're watering and it "runs right threw the bottom", it sounds like you obviously let your soil dry down too much. water shouldn't run right out of the drain holes as soon as you pour it in the container, regardless of good drainage. lol

and if you have to water every other day in 3gal pots.. it sounds to me like you're stressing the plant with under watering.. a common beginner mistake. i'm flowering in 2gal pots right now and water every 3-4 days.

Do you have a tray or something under your buckets? If you do, just water enough until the trays are almost full, then come back in an hour or so to see if the excess has been soaked back up. I put some newspaper in the bottom of my pots (to keep soil/perlite from coming out) and then put about an inch of perlite on the bottom before adding my soil (which I mixed with perlite and dolomite lime). I have a small plant - 3 branches with some secondary growth starting that I haven't watered in a week. It will get watered tomorrow for sure though, the pot was starting to feel a little light when I checked a while ago.

Any stones or broken up bricks or clay pots will do the job for nothing, just rinse them off first. I always watered from the bottom by always using kiddy pools under as many buckets as could fit in each. Watering from the bottom prevents leaching out all the nutients by running the water down through the soil. Also when you fertilize , your soil won't end up with all those excess salts building up in the there. Always watering from the bottom with something under your containers keeps water off you floors, you can put the pools an inch or two off the floor with strips of wood to prevent any mildew from condensation between the pools and the floor. Cheap fix, excellent results!!!!
