I blew it on the timing of the tincture....

This was my 3rd batch of tincture. The first two came out just fine, using a freezer recipe (standard 1-2 oz bud/trim, decarbed; 1 pt Everclear). Put in freezer & shake twice a day..... Now, here's where I made my mistake. I looked up a lot of recipes online before I began, and decided on the freezer version for seven days in the freezer. Came out great. I use it for nausea, and it took 2 droppers, which I did think was a little much compared with what I read, but it was fine, and the batch of 24, 1/2 bottles lasted 3 months both times, using it 2-3 times a day.
Now, this time, I ran out, so the recipe that I use for my measurements, etc, has five days in the freezer, and I figured since I was so nauseous, that five days would be just fine.....NOT. Unfortunately, it's not potent enough to last an hour.
So, I guess I learned a valuable lesson. Don't run out, and don't be impatient.
I also read about warm methods since this happened, and they take months, so, if anyone has tried both and knows if cold or room temp is better, I'd sure be interested!
Anyway, some FYI, and I'd like to learn, too.
thanks as always.

Warmer temps should extract faster. The freezer method is more for making smokeable extracts than tinctures.

I doubt that two days sooner would have made that much difference if 7 days gave you good results before but maybe 7 days is the magic number.

When making QWISO or QWETOH the washing period is just minutes to extract the surface resins for making oil.

okay, here goes my lack of knowledge, but I'm old enough where I don't get as embarrassed as I used to :p. What is QWISO & QWETOH? &, as I'm new to making things (it's the first time I grew enough to have more than just enough to smoke), to let you know my experience (or, lack thereof), I've made cannabutter, but can't anymore due to cholesterol (I have pre-diabetes, and also can't make much with it!) and tincture so far. I'm chronically ill, and have pain & nausea, so I'm getting the tincture for the pain/nausea, which I'm finding will be better than smoking. I also use hash (so far bought in dispensaries) to sleep. I'm going to learn to make it next. And, oils. I'm not in a state where I can by vape pens, and when I go out, I need to smoke (usually in the restrooms) for the nausea.
So, my next question (before I got off on my long explanations) was, ...the 'washing period'.....?
thanks a lot!

Oh, and I've been looking through the threads, and it looks like the warmer method for tincture is (on what I've seen so far) is much longer, as in months. I'm willing to wait that long if it works! I need to get busy then.

QWISO is Quick Wash Isopropyl alcohol and QWETOH is the same with Ethanol, (Etoh in lab slang), rather than Isopropyl alcohol.

With either you keep everything in the freezer overnight at least. Pot should be ground up or at least small bits already in a jar. Some sort of filter should be ready to go over something like a mason jar or pyrex measuring cup and it doesn't hurt to have those cold too tho pouring an ice cold liquid into a room temp mason jar shouldn't crack it. Other jars not made for canning may so keep them in a clean dish so if they do break you don't lose your extract. Good idea to do that in any case.

You just pour in enough cold solvent to cover the pot and stir for a couple minutes then pour thru a filter. Add some more solvent stir quickly then pour that thru so you get the last of the goody. The washed pot is good compost but that's about it even tho there are medicinals still in it.

For edibles I use coconut oil in a crock pot that I heat up to higher temps using a variac to crank up the voltage so I can heat the mix up enough to make the pot decarb right in the oil. After it finishes bubbling I'll lower the temp then add liquid sunflower lecithin and simmer it overnight before straining thru a fine sieve into a mason jar. Can eat it right off the spoon so should be fine for a diabetic or a vegan. Works really well for my arthritis and muscle pain and a dose at night helps all the next day.

Getting into growing hi-CBD pot and that works wonders compared to the regular stuff. I can PM you a link to a How-TO I did elsewhere and should really do one here to so I can just add a link to my sig like the grow journal I rarely update. :)

thanks! I see I have a lot to learn. And, a few things to buy ;). I'm growing two medical strains this year, both hybrids, and one is high CBD (made a mistake getting low CBD on the other...I looked & looked....too long, got bleary-eyed). Anyway, I'm growing "Gold Leaf" and "Trainwreck". They're from ILGM, and one of them is their own; I can't remember which.

Just to be sure; I do decarb first, don't I?

thanks again for your help.

For edibles you want to decarb for the high. A lot of evidence shows that medicinally pot works just as well without decarbing tho you won't feel the effects as a high so much.

If decarbing in the oven make sure to seal the pot well in tinfoil and allow to cool slowly in the oven to room temp so you don't lose all the terpenes and flavinoids that evaporate if baked on a cookie sheet openly.

If you are going to smoke or vape your extracts then no decarb is needed.

I'm growing some OTTO#1 which is a hemp varietal bread for hi-CBD and less than 1% THC. Also some crosses made with it and Cannatonic. I only have one Otto female so growing some of my fave strains for the males so I can breed them with her and get some CBD versions after a couple years of farting around. Hope I live long enough to breed me some decent strains. Mom says if I make 65 in a year and a half I'm past the danger zone and it's a slow slide to a finish maybe decades in the future. She turns 91 in August and is tired of the slide but still got her garden planted this year. No pot in her garden but lots of veggies and flowers! :D

Sounds like your mom is doing pretty well if she has a garden at almost 91! I wish I was that healthy. Due to illness, I had to quit gardening (except pot) when I was in my 30's ..darn! Had to quit a lot of life things due to it, but.... thanks to cannabis, I'm better than I was back then. We live in the country now, so I can grow it and it's opening up a lot of new possibilities for help with the pain, nausea, etc. I didn't even see any seeds with only 1% THC; that's great. You sound like you're really into it. I'm hoping I can get as knowledgeable :-D, or somewhere near. I need to learn some terms. I bookmarked the terms, and look them up (usually; I didn't today ).
At least I see I've been decarbing correctly .
Oh, I just turned 65, and I guess I'm on the slow slide.....but, with this illness, I've been "old" for about 30 years :?. But, the 65 isn't bad .

I've spent a few thousand hours growing and studying pot since my first buds in '78 so you could say I'm kinda into it. :)

I didn't even see any seeds with only 1% THC; that's great.
Do some searching for "high CBD hemp seeds" or terms like it and something should show up. The legal hemp farms here in Canada have to grow strains containing less than 0.3% THC but most have low CBD numbers too where the Otto was bread to range up to 27% CBD but the yields are pathetic with the girl I have. I have made cocobudder with most of the first crop I got and there sure isn't a buzz in it. :)

Got lots of free reading material for you.

I found a great spot to download FREE POT BOOKS. I downloaded a grow bible first and got lots more. Books look great and complete like the real ones I have here. No web site but just a page of links. Just right click on what you want and then "Save Link As" to download so they don't open first as some are 50+ megs. They got lots. Enjoy.

thanks! sorry it took me so long. I've been without internet :wall:. Boy, talk about frustration. Back & forth w/ AT&T. It has worked for a few hours in the morning, and quit.
Anyway, I'll look into it. Sure appreciate your time :).

I put mine in a blender on high for five minutes and it is ready after that.

Now, I'm thoroughly confused. After this happened, I looked up making tinctures again, as it was mentioned that the cold method was usually used for smoking (now, I've got to see how that works)...anyway, I looked up the room temperature methods, and all of them I looked up take time. The minimum wait was 2 days, and maximum was a year! I saw one that said shake the jar for 5-10 minutes a day for 2 months. I'm actually trying that one now. (Actually, that one was with glycerin and I did it with Everclear. I was without internet and tried to remember...yeah, right :p. but, I'm hoping it'll come out all right anyway) So, @hammerandchisel , you're saying it'll have the strength in it right away?

thanks! :peace:

If you are extracting with EverClear and want it for just the resin you can extract out of the resin glands that only takes a few min. If you want the full plant extract then soaking for a good month is advised. Running in a blender will likely speed that up but with Everclear being so flammable and electric motors making sparks I'd be wary of that.

I'm planning on getting a good metal electric hand blender for making fresh harvest infused coconut oil. Get the coconut oil hot then add fresh buds and use the hand blender to grind them up in the hot oil. Drying the pot first loses terpenes and flavinoids so doing it with fresh pot saves those. Who knows what all adds to the effectiveness of the medicine and I tend to believe it all works together and research seems to support that belief.

I've always used the cupboard method. I decarb then fill up the jar with the decarbed bud and moonshine or everclaer. I stick that in my cupboard and shake daily for at least a few weeks. Then I just run it through some cheese cloth and it's always good and consistent. I like to call it swamp water ....lol

Since my tincture bottles are still full from the most recent batch, it's going to have to sit a month or more anyway, LOL! So, I'll surely find out from this method.

I'm interested in trying it with the fresh buds. What, exactly are you making with it? Whatever makes it stronger (for me, it's for the pain & nausea), is all the better!

I make cocobudder with it. I'm just posting how I make it and will drop a link in here when it's done. Won't be long as it's mostly a copy/paste deal from another forum where I'm an Admin.

Is there anything you make with the CocoBudder that is low carb? I'm pre-diabetic, and had to quit making the cannabudder due to that....and, my cholesterol is high, too....can't seem to win on this! If you eat low carb, it's hard to eat low fat, too, and not become a stick. I started out weighing 103 when I was diagnosed, and got down to 94 at one point. I seem to be stuffing chicken in my face all the time to gain weight without the fat! ugh. I made peanut butter cookies with it, but they were half cannabudder and half peanut butter (and this busts the "half",but_) , whey protein powder to hold it together....well, it melted immediately when I took it out of the refrigerator, so I couldn't take it anywhere. I couldn't find anything else to make that wasn't full of carbs....like yummy brownies ...I miss things like that!
Anyway, if you have any suggestions, I'm willing to try :D.
thanks!

I often just eat it off the spoon an hour after dinner.

My cholesterol is on the high side too but even the FDA has changed their thinking on that and have decided that higher cholesterol is healthier for older people and protective of their brains. The upsurge of Alzheimers over the last few decades is likely caused by the low-fat, low-salt crap we've been told the last 50 years.

I have hypotension and started eating extra salt on my food after decades of shunning it. I use pink Himalayan salt tho that doesn't taste as salty as regular salt that only has sodium and chloride in it. The Himalayan salt is only 42% sodium chloride and the rest are 83 other mineral salts. They come from salt beds that were laid down millions of years ago before man came along and contaminated everything.

I also am hypoglycemic and have a sweet tooth. Salty foods are not my fave and I rarely eat salty snacks other than cashews. I eat a lot of nuts but mostly raw ones like walnuts, almonds, filberts and love my raw pumpkin seeds. I'll mix a bunch of them together with real chocolate chips then add some pink salt that I've powdered. Nut meats are high in various minerals and good for my brain and prostate. Found out a couple years ago that my birth mother died at 75 after 10 years of dementia and hope to avoid that fate. Died 6 months before I made contact with my 5 half-siblings. They don't seem to want to have any contact and I think they think I showed up to grab a piece of the estate tho I had no idea our mother had died until I was told by the adoption reunion society that helped me make contact with them.

I take no pharma or OTC drugs other than a small dose aspirin once in a while for my arthritis tho now that I have sufficient CBD cocobudder don't take that either. Doc wanted me too after the small stroke I had 5 years ago but he's the old fart that wanted me to have a prostate biopsy after an uptick in my PSA that I brought down by the next test 3 months later. Also cut off my demerol because of this opiod crisis crap even tho I only used 30 in 4 or 5 months for a bum shoulder. More for fun than necessity tho so I didn't bitch. Wanted me to take an anti-depressant called Cymbalta that has terrible side effects and is really hard to get off of. Also took a half hour trying to install a chest tube in me with no anesthesia when my right lung collapsed a few years back for the second time. Like being stabbed in the ribs with twisting repeatedly over and over again. The other docs around here have been just as bad tho there is a newer one I started seeing recently that seems to know his stuff and has the ladies all ga-ga over him. :)

Pre-diabetes and type II can be controlled by diet and exercise and mainly caused by all the crap in our modern diets full of food-like substances instead of real food. High Fructose Corn Syrup is a leading culprit and is in almost all processed food these days. Even my old fave Campbell's tomato soup uses it now so no more Campbell's anything for me and I registered my disgust on their customer website. Save a penny a can by using HFCS instead of real sugar and contribute to diabetes and obesity.

I still weigh the same as I did as a teen and fit nicely into my 32" jeans. Full head of still red hair too so at least I got decent genes from my birth parents. Growing it out to donate to the cancer society for a wig. Half way down my back now. When I can sit on it it'll be time. :D

I have given thought to tinctures and its the months of wait time that keeps me putting it off.
I'm a bit impetuous so waiting is not one of my stronger points.

Canna capsules are also on my mind. Have you tried capsules?

Is there a large difference in effect between edibles? Say gummies, budder, tincture, capsules?

I've had edibles made with budder and eaten gummies, they seem to have a similar effect.

Tincture I guess may be a bit quicker acting as there is less digestion? I only guess this
as I have not had a tincture yet.

I tried caps and they are a PITA to make. Depending on how the oil was made for them they likely will be missing a lot of the terpenes etc I'd prefer to have in my medicine.

I'm not much for using pot for the high. I want medicine that works for me. The CBD stuff made into cocobudder fits that bill nicely and pretty much my go-to now. Small hits of a good sativa in the pipe are nice for quick relief for my depression but a bit too much and I fell crappy.

I always have lots of pot around of over a dozen different strains so setting a jar in the cupboard for a month or more is no big deal but I don't use tinctures any more either.

Gummies are for kids or better bjs. ;)
