I am a complete novice.

Alrighty, first, Hi my name is Jessica.
My hubby got some clones, they were already rooted and in little cups.
He works out of state half the week so I am in charge.
Any tips any help and I want to be able to keep this thread as my little life line.
they are in the closet with a HPS. 400w, I think.
temp stays around 75-80 day and 70-75 at night. 60 percent humidity.
a few older leaves tips are starting to turn yellow. I use distilled water to give them a drink. And have the lights on from 5-6 am until 830 pm.
Is this sufficient and any tips on how to not have the turn hermie?
thanks a bunch.

Sounds good so far.You should be able to use tap water, just let it sit out in an open container to evap chloramine. You should extend your lights on hours.18 hrs on,6 hrs off would be better imo.Make sure you keep your temps below 85.When you start to flower make sure there are no light leaks. That's about all I can think of right now.

First, welcome to RIU :) I'll be having my girl manage our garden when I'm traveling on business next week, so I'm hoping we can help you do some good here as I would wish for myself!

Pictures would really help diagnose the leaf problem... it very well could be meaningless. Your temps are within acceptable range, but you want your light cycle to be 18 hours on, and six hours off (referred to as the 18/6 cycle, which is standard for vegitative state, which you are currently in). Personally, I would run my lights outside of the hottest part of the day (6pm to 12pm) then off from 12pm to 6pm, but you have temps under control so you can do lights on whenever is convenient as long as you have at least an 18/6 cycle.

Also, a Metal Halide (MH) light is much better for the stage your in. Is the light a blueish tinge or yellow? An HPS is more for flowering, but it will still work, just not as effectively... again, pics of the setup would help.

One last thing... did he leave any nutrient solutions behind? If so what are they, and what type of medium are your clones in?

All the best, I'm going to subscribe to your thread and follow your grow.

Cheers,

ps. At this point, it isn't really critical if there are some light on the plants when in lights-out, but it is *very* important when you go to flowering, so observe any light-leaks you might have when your room is in dark mode now, so you can take care of them before you flower.

Thanks for the replies guys, here's the deal with the lights, I'm just using this HPS, (it is orange) until next week and ill pick up another MH bulb.
I am using a bedroom (to grow these)in my hubby's dads house. and me and my kids are sleeping in the same room at night, I absolutely need the lights out by 8-830.
just turn them on earlier i guess? When we are still sleeping shouldn't be a problem to get the 18 hours.
the guy I got them from must've stuck a chord in my hubby because he is adamant about the water ph and that if I don't use distilled or check the ph of the water they'll turn hermie.

Ahhh, yes, just flip the lights on earlier. Any chance you can sacrifice the closet? That would be far more manageable. When you go to flower, you will need pretty much 100% darkness in lights-out, which will be a full straight 12 hours.

Do you have a pH tester? The optimum range for cannabis in soil is 6.5-7.0 (I've read), but my plants seem to be happy with me stabilizing at 6.4.

It is in the closet sorry for not being clearer, and I've found the temp to get too hot with the door closed. We have Jerry rigged a dark blanket in front of the door but the top is opened to let the heat out. So the light escapes the top. The timer I got wont actually get the light to turn all the way on, it just stays dim and never brightens up. Not looking forward to manually turning that shit on at two.
lol.
yeah I got one but it's some ridiculously expensive one. And I don't think I can use it in soil it says you can't touch the glass tip. Bluelab pH pen.
we have ph up and ph down and we have the stimulator which is supposed to be used for the first 2 weeks of flowering.

You will need a tent if you are going to be growing in a room you are living in.

For veg you will be fine with light leaks but do you really want to be blinded by a 400w everytime you enter the room?

You are gonna need a fan and filter. Start saving for it now. Weed can get really stinky. It will make your clothes smell and people will know that you are growing/smoking wherever you go.

I was just about to say what Flaming said :)

You definitely want to get a good timer... I bought this one at Walmart for $13, it's the one I'm currently using with my 400w HPS. It is specifically rated for appliances, not just a standard light bulb.

Tell hubby that he's going to have to do some research on the things discussed in this thread (fan/filter, ventilation and the specifics of the flowering cycle (dark period)).

tbh, just to save you some money, i'd cut back on the distilled water. if possible, i would at least use a 50/50 mix of distilled/tap water. also, if tap water causes your plants to hermie, i'd suggest getting better genetics, because that has got to be the silliest shit i've have yet to hear in reference to growing.

Yeah water will not make your plant hermie.

High heat and light leaks during flowering can cause it.

I use tap water. Let it sit out at least 24hours and you won't have to worry about excess chlorine.

Fair enough.
Im just the babysitter. So, bear with me, I thought it sounded dumb too, but I buy this kids finished products for along time now, and it's good. This is the first time I'm trying to grow any thing that i didn't just stick a seed in one of my moms house plants.

Fair enough I thought it sounded stupid, too, but he told him if the water ph is off it would do that.
bear with me, I'm just the babysitter. I've been buying this kids finished bud for awhile now and he's doing something right. But this is the first time I'm not just putting a seed in one of the house plants to see what'll happen.

I'll chime in and say a tent would really help you. Light leaks are gonna be an issue in flower. Virtual Sun has realively inexpensive starter ones. Get a good timer..the light should be firing up. Newbies tend to overnute and overwater. You want good drainage.

I got my 2x4x5' tent for a little less than $100. You really should save up for one along with a fan/filter combo, < $200. Eventually, you are definitely going to need them for when you go into flowering. Guaranteed.

A lot of good info on this thread, and extremely valuable recommendations. You've already got the light and the babies, so a little further and you'll be on your way :)

I've got four plants flowering in my tent as stated above under a 400w HPS. They're between a month and three weeks in age, and had a troubled start, but so far they fit ok under the setup I described above. Check the last page and the latter of the 2nd page in the link in my sig to see how it all fits.
