ok so im leaning toward a top feed hydro drip system. I'm just a little confused about the air stone, is it essential and wtf is it used for?

I've heard you need it to pump air into the reservoir with the nutrients and i've also heard of using it as a grow medium.

You only need the airstone, you don't need to top feed at all. Look up DWC or Bubble Ponics. Cheaper and there is no water pump/lines or timers involved, just an air pump and airstones.

oh VERY nice! i'm loving this setup. I just have a couple questions.

do you run the pump 24/7 or hook it into a timer?
and do you have to worry about the roots reaching the water or is it okay if this happens?

Yes you run the air pump 24/7. You want the roots to reach the water, thats the whole idea.

the trick to bubbleponics is to feed oxygen into the water so the plants don't drown...There is no need for a drip system but it does help especially with the start of plants.

ok got my setup. switched from miracle grow soil in dixie cups.

roseman your guide really helped, thank you.

i'm using black aquarium rocks as my medium though because i could not find clay pellets anywhere. Still in dixie cups with tiny holes, roots seem to be growing fine though because they're protruding out the bottom.

I only have about 1/4 the cup in the reservoir though, do i need to have it all in there?

two days have gone by and its been blasting results.
