no plus if u go to home depot they video tape everything and use it in prosecutions. It says that all over the parking lot on signs. THey dont carry those type of products, look for a local hydroponic store or even garden store/ nursery.

The bulb should not be 2 feet away.

I have a 600w HPS and it is 16inches away from the tops.

You should be looking to get your 250w around 8-12 inches away from the tops.

you place your hand between lamp and the top of the plant and if the back of your hand gets too hot to keep there for 1 minute then it is too close. Move it away until you comfortably keep your hand there without it getting too hot.

This should be around 8-12 inches as i said.

Good look with your grow.

You may want to consider using CFL's blue spectrum for vegging or an MH bulb for your hps ballast.
Alot of manufacturers make MH bulbs which run in an HPS ballast.

Hope this helped.

a long time ago with my first grow i went to home depot and found a 250hps watt with a ballast for only like 50$. it was a steal. it worked great but unfortunately i had to get rid of it for personal reasons but for the few weeks that i had it it was awesome.

This information is from the book titled, "Grow Great Marijuana" by Logan Edwards.

250w in a 2x2 area should be one foot away.
400w in a 3x2 area should be 1.5 feet away.
600w in a 3.5x3.5 area should be 2 feet away.
1000w in a 4x4 area should be 2.5 feet away.

But keeping in mind that environmental conditions can also have a huge effect on lamp placement. Good ventilation and circulation keeps air moving around the foliage, which brings the temperature down and reduces the chance of heat damage. Under the right conditions, HID fixtures can be kept as close as 6 inches from the plant. But in general, they should be kept 1-2 feet away. Start with your HPS about a foot away and if you see any signs of damage and move it up to eighteen inches.

Hope that helps, but it's not my information if someone chooses to disagree.

the best way to measure how far away it should be is a light meter but he prolly doesnt wanna buy that. I use one so I dont even know how far away it is i just know how much lumens my plants have

Hey Blazed Hippie, I was where u were not long ago at all. 1 of those 150 watt HPS will do you just fine for 1 plant. Yes you will have to keep it 6-12 inches from the top of the cola, and you WILL HAVE MUCH BETTER RESULTS, using a screening method, to grow your 1 plant sideways. It will give you a even plant canopy which allows all the buds to get equal and adequate lighting, not just the cola at the top. You will yield more and have better quality over all. You just wont have the one big bud, you will have many small and middle sized ones. Also, you will find you can still add in a few CPF's just to get even more spectrum coverage and even slightly better buds and coverage.

Hope it helps.

What i am going to do to combat this is cut the top colas off when they are ripe and let the rest of the plant ripen up before cutting those parts. This should remedy that issue. I will definately try new things next time im open minded to the idea, however i wanna do it "my" way this time to see if I can even do it using books and intuition.

Also, I got my 150 watt hps's off ebay for $90 each including shipping. CPF's from wal-mart ($5 each or so), and a LED light (good one, not cheap x-mas light ones)off ebay as well for $300.

The combo of these 3 light types gave me the best results I have ever seen off 4-6 plants in a micro screen setup. I wanted to just go with a 400 watt DIGITAL ballast HPS setup ($300), but it would have been way too hot for the small area I had at the time. So I went with 2 small HPS and a LED (wanted to try them out) instead. ($500 total for the 3 lights and CPF's). Extra upfront cost, and I only have slightly more light output this way, but the extra spectrums and reduced heat, was worth it to me.

For one plant, that $90 150 watt HPS of ebay and a few CPF's will make you happy as hell, especially if you screen. :)

If you have email, I can send some pics of my old setup.

I suggest you look at a 400 watt hps. Anything less and your not upgrading much over your current light. The results will speak for itself. You should also use it to grow 4 to 10 plants at a time as it will cover 3 x 3 area. If you only want one plant go for multiple strains a couple plants a piece. Clone if needed. Do that and dont grow but one or 2 cycles a year vs. constant one plant. One plant leave little for error.....Do a search of the 400 watt club for results. thank me later......

Oh, you will need to air cool it but its fine for small spaces if venting.
