My plants are already flowering under 600w of CFL's. Dont ask me how I somehow ended up with this many CFL's, but I did. Perhaps at some point i should have stopped to get a more economical and more effective 400w HPS, but I didnt and Im halfway through flowering and wishing I had more light. I mean, dont get me wrong... my plants look great, but I can tell theyd like a bit more light. I think im jus going to say fuck it, and do this whole grow with CFL's. Ill get an HPS when im at a better time... financially.
Well CFL's are kinda like potato chips. Can't just have one. One leads to the next, to the next, etc.

They are cheap in the beginning. But when you want great light, doing it via CFLs just doesn't pay. I read a lot about how bad CFLs are and that its a waste. This is true to an extent. Its easy to add a couple more CFLs, but not that easy to add a few more HIDs. This is the draw to use CFLs; its scalable. Most beginners go for CFLs. They veg well, and the new grower thinks COOL! add a few more. Then a few more, etc. Then they realize that have exceeded in heat, out-lay costs, and running costs that of an HID.

I used a incandescent grow bulb for my first sprout. Then off to 1 70W HPS, then a 150W HPS. Flowered it's clones under a pair of 150w. I now have a 400W to be set up for the winter grow(s)

The mother is a mutha! I'm veggin now under 4 23W CFLs and the 70W HPS. (still flowerig under the pair of 150W's)

yeah, i am rolling into 600 true watts of CFL myself... the best way i saw it described was:

step 1: buy 2 CFL's
step 2: buy 2 more
step 3: see step 1

lol. I plan on growing during the winter and use the extra heat for room heating. probably use the ballast to warm the cloning tray too. I can roll a pair of plants every month for about 5 months or so and have a year's worth in jars. (just keep a momma ad a few clones going under floros)

Ok, new question...

Metal Halide VS CFL's for FLOWERING. Which would you choose? A 400w metal halide or 580w of CFL's (warm and cool)?
like you said b4 getting another ballast is usually cheaper then getting new stupid ass conversion bulbs every year. and to flower id use the MH over the CF for sure.
