So I went to lowes and they have a buch of hps bulbs like 35 50 70 100 watts and up. And some have a medium base and others have a mogul base. Can I buy one of those Aluminum type light clamps and put a 70 watt hps light bulb in? Or does it need a ballast or something?

I would seriously do some homework before messing with those lights, and find out what they require. The best thing to do is,of course, buy a grow system from any reputable source, and grow from there,it is sooo much easier.

Yes Ive looked at those options but I'm doing a stealth grow only 1 or two plants. The smallest hps grow light is 150. Thanks for your input but nobody has answered my question. 70 hps bulb is like 15$ and light clamp is like 15$.

You could use an aluminum clamp and put a 70w hps in there but you need the ballast. Then just wire up the socket cord coming from the ballast to the aluminum clamp socket cord. Like someone said earlier, Do your homework and research this shit. I know it seems easy to ask a question, but In order to fully understand something, one must research thoroughly. Stick to CFLs if you can't put the work in

He can buy a 400-watt HPS for $120.00 ... $30.00 less expensive than you said a 250-watt should cost. A 250-watt would be even less expensive.
