I just switched my 1000 W mh lamp with a 1000 W HPS . The temp is 5 - 6 deg celcius hotter??? I have always heard the MH should be hotter.

Its about 5” above the canopy. I have a vented hood with a 6” hyperfan pushing through it . Seperate 6” hyperfan sucking through scrubber. Its the radiant heat from that hps lamp that is much hotter than the MH was.
Because its a spectrum full of red and more importantly lots of IR which warms objects it hits like thermometers , you might get a more accurate reading out of direct light.

I noticed the hps bulb appeared brighter and hotter than the mh when I switched the bulbs. I have a cheap light meter and the hps reading was thru the roof compared to the mh at the same height. But after raising and lowering it I realized the plants can handle it.

HPS bulbs are brighter, and they emit more infrared. that may be the reason for the added heat.
