Maybe you should do more research before you plug in the light. Not tryin to be a troll but you don't wanna get in over your head. Lighting is a no brainer when it come to growing.

well they are both successful for vegging but MH gives a more concentrated light with UVA and UVB in it, which means faster vegging. the big difference comes in flowering: hps red spec light will tend to make larger, fluffier, lighter buds, and it is perported that plants have a stronger flowering response from red. while blue will cause tight dank buds, another side effect of the UVA/B from blue during flowering however, is that it causes the plant to produce more thc resin to cover the bud (like sunscreen for humans), so stronger bud IMO, which is why i use my mh for veg and im flowering with both :)

Now when starting with the mh first how long should i use it for and when should i switch???? Thanks
If you need to ask questions like this, you need to do a lot more research before you have a successful grow. Lights are only one aspect... what you're implying here is that you don't even have a basic understanding of growing weed.

Read all of the sticky's in the Newbie section, then spend a couple of hours here: http://growweedeasy.com

Best of luck.

ps. HINT: your plants will grow 2-3 times taller than they are when you go from veg to flower in the first 21-24 days.

Your ps is also strain dependent,Give him a break we all started somewhere.

MH- primarily blueish spectrums of summer (veg stage), HPS- primarily yellowish spectums of fall (bloom stage)

a basic breakdown to help ya get started-

germination ------ 3~4 days, darkness
seedlings -------- 3~4 days, 18hrs light a day (preferably a weaker non intense light)
vegetative stage - 2~4wks (subject to personal choices, develop roots & stalk strength, get to a starting height) 18hrs a day MH light
the Flip ---------- 24hrs of darkness (get your head right and get ready to commit to the grow)
flowering stage 1 - 4wks, transitioning stage (branches start, sex shows, trimming of energy-sucking non-producing leaves/branches, prep for flwr stage 2) 12hrs a day HPS light
flowering stage 2 - 4wks (indica strains), full bloom stage (nug sites development) 12hrs a day HPS light

you can run the whole gambit w the HPS bulb, but you have both bulbs proper for each stage of growth, might as well do it up right
(clean them finger prints off the bulbs, the bulbs get so hot the oil from your fingers will bust em)

* youtube is your best friend in this endevour

this vid is where i started - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxV7n8vz7rk ("Jay likes to grow his plants big" .....14 plants at a lb. each is mighty motivating to me)

welcome to the fold, post sum pics when ya get going, we want to see :weed:

Is no one going to address that the the MH has to be a MH conversion lamp to run in that hps ballast?
Also whoever said HPS produces fluffy buds shouldn't be offering too much advice.

I've always heard in order to best mimic the sun u should use mh for veg and up until the last 3-4 weeks of flowering which is when u should switch to hps. The idea being that the sun gives off a more white light during the summer and that it gives off a more amber color in fall.

Edit: I'm flowering right now with both and from my experience the buds under the mh got fatter quicker but the buds under the hps are now almost twice as big. They caught up at like week 3 of flowering so next run I think ima run mh thru week 3 of flowering then switch to hps.

i dunno bout that CMH technology, while the spec graph looks impressive there were a couple things on the site that one should look into before buying one of those bulbs.
looks like they need a spec'd ballast designed for CMH technology.

what ballasts are compatable w CMH?
* 0 - 39w - Electronic Ceramic MH Ballasts (specifically stating "FOR CMH")
* 50-400w - either a --> standard Magnetic MH pulse start <--. or Electronic CMH ballasts (specifically stating "FOR CMH")
*210-315w - Mastercolor Elite MW(med wattage) use a new ballast specifically designed for it
*250-400w - Retro-white hi wattage only use the GE Ultramax Magnetic unit
*450-1000w- do not use anything w/out a safety overload protection circuit

Have been Delisted By Philips, AKA Discontinued. (there are other manufactures, but none that make "open fixture" rated CMH bulbs)
Philips was Out of stock and just did a production Run. (March 01 2013)
We are told that this may be there last production Run.

just a lil FYI for ya before you run out and drop $50 on one of them bad-boys
but we digress, this guy already has a light kit w both MH/HPS bulbs and hes wondering which to use
