As low as it can go without burning, Ive found holding my hand above plant and adjusting light, if it burns your hand or is uncomfortable it will burn or be uncomfortable for plant. Thats how ive been told/taught. I stuffed up germing seeds for 12/12 from seedin my flower room in a corner and the lanky stretchy things are a pain in ass now but i couldnt lower one of my lights.

Depends on your plant age and room environment. If your in a tent, just hang the fucker at the top. I keep light further than a lot would suggest, but ime you’re better off with more even light coverage with higher reflectors, than burning the middle of your canopy while the edges don’t get enough light.

I run straight hps for veg and flower good advice given already I always start all my plants under t5 for 2 weeks then they go right into the hps room if you have an oscillating fan you cant go wrong with 30inches I feel like every time you move it give it 2 days at least to see how it's doing...

One thing I noticed is some of my hps bulbs are not exactly new i had 2 plants under a 400w then moved them to another 400w and they sizzled so time for a new bulb lol ...

Good luck I always just re pot and bury thos elegy seedlings

Better yet, why guess? I’d buy a cheap light meter. It comes in handy throughout the grow. Then you know exactly how high your lamp should be. I use mine all the time.

Dr.meter LX1010B Digital Illuminance/Light Meter, 0-100,000 Lux Luxmeter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004K0A7I6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_6j.9DbYE26EY6

16ins I run my 1ks at 18-20in but if coming from weaker lights go easy for a few days.
What about this light?
Seedlings don't need much light, 600w could really do them harm if too close.

I'd hang it real high (30+") above the babies and gradually lower it over the course of a week or two. By then they will be ready for it.

Don't use a 600 watt for seedlings. It's overkill. Get something more suited for starting plants. It doesn't have to be expensive. You can get a T5 fixture for cheap or some CFL's even cheaper. Also if you make a small investment in a t5 or even an inexpensive LED you can have plants started and vegging while you have plants flowering under the 600 watt. Timed right you'll always have plants both in flower and in veg so when you harvest you already have plants to go into flower right away. That way you can be harvesting every 8 -10 weeks.
