Hps 4 veg?

Im getting my hps for my plant thats currently flowering but i also have 5 little ones that are about 3 weeks old....

Now ino i could use both on all the plants but i rather just run one if i could......So would the hps be better than the flouresents for veg? Is it bad to use the hps for veg?

If i use the hps will it veg faster?

help me out with sum answers..........+rep

If you are running the hps on your flowering plants will you be running it 12/12? If so I think it won't count as veg anymore. I have used 40w fluorescent shop lights with great success during veg, but an hps should be ok, but expect some stretch as the plants look for their blue light.

i got a seperate dark room for the one floweering . but they would streatch even with all that light, i think thats wrong?

During veg they are looking for blue light and the hps doesn't offer it. You can deal with it, get a conversion bulb, run your fluoros or run your fluoros and hps. I can't think of any other options.

I would take flouresent over HPS for veg any day. When I was using my hps for veg the girls stretched like mad, but under the flouresent their size was far more manageable, though with a slower rate of growth.

The HPS will outperfom all but the best flourescents, particularly a good T5 setup. I've used 6-bulb T8's and had excellent results too. Also, I just switched out my MH bulb(conversion) with the HPS in my 400 watt system, and it actually stopped the stretching that i was getting with the 'lower lumen' MH bulb. In short, a HPS will cover a slightly larger area that a MH of equal wattage, due to the highre lumens per watt. It overpowers the lack of blue, trust me, I tried it. It's not a huge difference. A 400 watt HPS will cover a 3' x 3' area, without stretch, and a 400 MH will cover about 2 1/2' x 2 1/2', maybe a hair more. That's the difference 16,000 lumens of HPS can provide. Go with a premium Agromax bulb, and you'll be doing even better.

It's all about area vs. lumens. You need at least 3,000 lumens per square foot, or they will stretch with any type of grow light.

You were trying to cover too much area, or had the light too far away. I guarantee it. :wink:

I run only a HPS, and I never seem to have this " stretch " problem that people refer to. I actually have more stretch when using a MH bulb that produces 15,000 less lumens and has to be kept at the same distance. I just use a Enhanced Spectrum.

Growth rate is also significantly faster under a HPS bulb as well.

When I first trid MH, I thought they were great because they were growing so fast. Well, that lasted about a week, until i realized that they were just stretching like crazy.LOL




If a person can afford to run more watts, then the MH is the way to go. Watt for watt, HPS is the way to go.

if you can use a hps then do or use both but put the fluros round the sides to supplement the light and encourage latteral growth.
HPS will beat MH hands down when you need to use one light all the way through your grow.

not trying to highjack thread here (trying to add some more related info into it), but since I'm using a 400 watt MH bulb right now in veg and trying to cover a lot of plants (some are further than 18" from bulb which is not good), would I be better off switching to my HPS bulb? I have a GrowBright HPS bulb that I was waiting to use for flowering. Here is a pic to show you what I mean.

That's the same exact setup that i had,(even the HTG light) and they stretched like crazy with that MH conversion bulb covering that much area. I switched to the HPS bulb and it stopped immediately. Make the switch, and if they still stretch, you're covering too much area. 3' x 3' is about the max for that light.

Also, go 4 wide, rather than 4 long, because the light is stronger at the sides of the bulb, rather than front and back. You could even bend open the reflector to cover a little more side area, which I do. Also, the light at the base of the bulb is the weakest, and behind that it's almost useless. That should help you get an idea of how to get your pots arranged for optimum coverage. :)

Also, get a couple single T5's if you want to cover those plants nicely. Place them around the outer edges, and then everything will grow alot more equally.

It's not even a comparision. Go with the HPS and get it placed at the right distance, and they'll do alot better.(especially as they get bigger)

its not bad to use hps for veg. but hps dose put off a lot of heat. the flros or cfls would be better for young seedlings. you can put the flros 1-3 inches from your plants with little or no heat.let your seedlings grow under the flros for a couple of weeks then transfer them to the hps on veg hours (18/6). may you be cursed with many buds:leaf::bigjoint:

+rep, thanks. I will try moving them wide first and if they start stretching real bad ill put in the HPS. Thanks.
