So i am light shopping as I’ve just discovered my 1000w led from amazon is only putting out 110w in my 2x4 4 ft high tent with 5 “autos” ive been reading some other threads but i cant find out if hps watt is true watt compared to Most LED im finding don’t actually put out the wattage they state. Can you guys give your best recommendations on why hps over led or vice versa.

I have a 2x4 tent and run a Timber 3VL, it produces 320 watts has great coverage, however a little on the pricey side. HLG makes fine products also, I don't know much about them just that they are good. I have 2 HLG 65's that I just started playing with. Do you have a budget in mind?

It was like this for many years and still is so on Amazon. Dont buy any lights there, they are 99.9% shit. Most people use white led lights now, and the tendency is to quote the actual power draw, although amazon seems to be still in fairy land. And no, no matter how many good reviews they have on amazon, theyre not.

That’s about right. LED lights only use a watt each. The 1000w is comparing PAR level with a HID grow light. I have had amazing success with LED grow lights, but your going to get a lot of people who won’t use anything but HPS. My LED says 1500w and it draws almost 300w from the wall. I have to say my plants are benefiting well from this grow light. It’s personal preference in my opinion.

Honestly more like months of reading lmao, I disagree with the amazon thing though, they do have a few decent leds now.
Yeah I’m looking at the specs and the details of them on amazon and some of them look like they could be really good they have great reviews but everyone is telling me that they are shit so now I’m scared. I was gonna go with Amazon because I have prime and it can be here in two days. I have plants that are going into flowering and I don’t wanna fuck this up I need them sooner than later

The simple answer is yes, the HPS/MH systems pull the wattage they claim while LED's try to be deceptive. What LED marketing people do is add up the max voltage for each led and than claim that is the number when in reality it is a bold faced lie. So if they have 100 x 10w leds they will claim 1000 watts when in reality it only draws 150 watts and never drives the led's to their max. When an HPS manufacturer says 600 or 1000 watts their lights actually draw that much power. The key thing to remember when looking at LED's is to look at the power draw, not the marketing number they put on the box.

My first years of growing was under a 1000w +400w hps . In a large room, heat was never an issue and I grew monster autos. Down sizing to a tent forced adjusting everything just for the heat of hps...cool tube 400w served me well for another few years till blurples/led came on board...after proving to myself led COULD...I began switching everything to a combination qb/ autocobs...with a total draw approx 280w...My overall yeilds have doubled at least after switching...kinda indicates the 280 watts are much more efficient than the much higher hps system.
Always read as much as you can on lights, pros and cons...amazon has good lights sprinkled among the poor ones but most will do something...just not as well as you will probably want.

So in your grow tent is it 2 plants per led at about 300? I’ve use HPS before in my first grow and that grow was a lot simpler. I didn’t necessarily have a tent had a very small budget but I can say I’ve had less problems. I really wanted to try an LED this time because I do remember the HPS did send my light bill pretty high and it was hot. What is the name of the one you used?

Thank you! This is what i was trying to figure out when comparing!!

Don't be scared, just do your research. The fact is in a 2x4 tent you have 8 square feet and you want a min of around 35 watts per square foot. That's only 280 watts. My first plant was grown under an Amazon LED which most refer to as a blurple light. It was listed as 1200 watts and only had a power draw of 150 watts. I grew a Northern Lights Auto in the same space you have, it gave me 3.5 oz of decent bud. 2 of those lights would have given me 2 decent plants and at 3.5 oz a piece would have been fine. The reason I upgraded was the bud was not as dense at I would like. It was still nice, just not the best I could make it. I moved up to MH/HPS light and for my next grow I have an HLG 600 which arrives today. The HLG is a good upper end LED which pulls 600 watts and will produce less heat than my 1000 watt MH/HPS. Here is a pic of my first plant grown under a my blurple. To me this shows definitively you can grow a decent plant under a blurple, there are just better lights that would give better results.

Nioce! Thank you. I will add them to the compare list

If you get led make sure it has it’s white or has white lights with blue and purple. That’s what I got. It’s doing really well. You cant pull more than 220w from your wall plug so the led says some ridiculous wattage output but it still draws the max it can (220) from the wall so it’s decent, it was around 450. Shit light my whole room at night. I have no experience on hps so I won’t say which is better. This is just what I did. LED also saves 10x more money. Most efficient.
