How to TOP a Plant

ok so i read this whole forum but i got no help at all on how to Top a plant. Many people say you have to pinch off the mail cola like a node or so from the top. I really dont even know what a node :S

so can anyone help me in showing me or telling me exactly how to top a plant. My three girls have been growing real healthy so far and they're 40 days old and i really dont want to fuck this up. any help is appreciated

First off I assume you meant MAIN cola not MAIL (male?) cola right? If you don't understand the concept of a male vs. female plant and what a COLA is then you need to go back to square one and do some reading.

Second... if you have a cola then you are already too far into flowering to be topping. Topping is done in the VEG state..... before flowering. Some people will top into the first 2-3 weeks of flowering ... but unless you are an experienced grower and know what you're doing... it's not advised.

Thirdly.... do yourself and the experienced growers who took time to learn and write books a solid and invest $25 in a marijuana grow book which explains the different methods of topping... aka supercropping.

Lastly.... if you want a short cut speedy answer then here it is. If your plant is still in VEG... then you can take a SANITIZED razor blade and slice off the very top growth..... either at the stem right above new growth or in the middle if you want to do the FIM method. Again... sounds like you need a little further reading before you go and make cuts on your plants.

be aware that if you top then you will have 2 main colas but in doing this both there potencies will be cut in half instead of having one awsome cola youll have 2 so-so colas

ya i did mean the main cola but it seems i dont have one since i'm in the veg. stage.

i followed the link that fridge posted, it explained Topping and fimming very good, thanks. I'm pretty sure i topped my plants as it is supposed to be done (we'll just have to wait and see)

and i heard that topping the plant doesnt do anything to the potency of the plant, you just get more yield of the same potency, Anyone know if what tsdriles is really true?

I see no reason for topping performed during the vegetative stage (and not too close to flowering) to reduce potency of the plant. I see encouraging leaf growth, which is what topping and FIMing do, doing nothing more than promoting growth. There is no logical reason for it to affect potency as long as all other needs are met properly.

Unless you chose to top the plant by cutting it at the base of its stem and completely detaching it from its root system (which isnt even topping that just killing your plant by cutting it off) then it wont reduce potency :) Topping doesnt affect potency just affects yield
