In this day and age almost every single digital camera has a plethora of features and addons but the most overlooked and possibly most useful is one that has always been there and that is;

Custom WB!
Womens basketball? What does that have to do with taking a quality plant photo?
Nothing, you idiot. That's white balance.

On your little fantastic piece of technology is an option to set your own white balance. On the fancy DSLR's you will have to choose a photo you have previously taken to set the white balance. On most point an shoots you can simply set the white balance by going to the options.

What does this mean?

Deficiencies! FUCK EM.

No information is complete without photos. So, tada.

one.jpgI can't even tell if that plant is green let alone deficient! What do I dooo?
Four.jpgTwo.jpgThree.jpgAdjust those settings! Once you have selected Custom WB simply choose the photo you have taken earlier of a white sheet of paper under the LED lights.

PoS1.jpgPoS2.jpg Point and shoot cameras are much more simple. Switch to a setting that isn't automatic and go to custom WB frame the white piece of paper under your lights and hit the ok button.

Five.jpgHere's that aforementioned white sheet of paper and set that white balance!

Six.jpg Ok so the plant the back is UNHEALTHY!

That's all folks. This also works for HPS and MH lights.

Hope it's useful.

^^^It's short, but it really is some good info for newbs, and people without photography skills. Plus many camera phones have this feature now and this should improve those photos if people are reminded to look for this feature.

Hey Psy, great post. Maybe now would be a good time to add some posts here on how to use the macro setting or some other camera-LED tricks/techniques for better photos? Maybe some more info will get it stickied, which we could use around here. I mean in the future more people are going to be growing with LED lights, and they will have problems at first. So imagine in the not too distant future they'll be posting to the "Problem" forums with those rose colored photos that are washed out of any detail, they'll be sent here to learn how to take a photo. So I say get jamming Psy or anyone who can contribute. Us "pho-tards" need you :).

Well if anyone has questions I'll be glad to answer them. Day off today just my bong, my plants my dogs and my woman.
Howdy dude, nice thread/tips! Question, is there a camera you'd recommend? I'm really just looking for something that's affordable but won't let me down. You know, like a junior bacon cheeseburger from Wendy's haha

I just talked to chronic about the same thing. The camera I use the most for my plant shots is a little canon powershot sd1000 I've had for about six years now.

Point and shoot cameras are very cheap now a days but I'd still be a bit wary as they aren't all great. Canon PowerShot or the Nikon equivalent. If you want clear photos make sure it's an optical zoom as a digital zoom simply crops the photo to make it larger
