How to reach max potential?

lst. just tie them over. let the lower branches get the height of the top cola, so you have all tops, keep the tops the same distance by tying down branches that get ahead too much. works well

You should still just grow it under the 400watter... if you keep them close to it they will grow like bushes, if you use the fluorescent they will grow like pinetrees... sure it costs more in electricity but the plants dont stretch as much and the lower buds grow heavier because they are able to be closer to the light since it's so bushy... trust me in the end you end up with more than you spend on the little extra electricity. I'd rather have a short bushy plant with lots of light than a 3 foot tall one with a decent top and a bunch of tiny stuff at the bottom. I did that with my first grow, i ended up with only 1 1/2 ounces off a 3 foot plant because i vegged under flourescents first... now i'm vegging its clone under a HPS and the plant is a LOT bushier... which means i'll be able to keep the HPS closer to the bottom branches too.

Ive got some preflowers on my plants and I was pretty much 100%on one of them which is male so i put it outside were it should start flowering. It had like numerous preflowers in one cluster and showed first from my two plants. The other one looks female coz it showed a lot later and it only got one preflower and i think i saw a tiny hair at the top of it.
Back to the topic I topped them both, have the cfl as close as possible and their bushy as fuck some branches dont even get much light because there covered with 3 branches on top of them lol. HPS is not an option for me and I will not use it in veg no matter what. I might get a 250watt MH after a couple harvests. Could anyone recommend some good female seeds that get a nice yield and good taste? But then again I dont want hermies so I'm not so sure about female seeds.
