Hi, i am starting a new room and was wondering how high it needs to be for lighting. My room is 5' x 10' x 6' tall. I f 6 foot is a tall enough height for see of green growing what are my limitations on light output vs. heat and space. Is a 1000w hps too big or hot or too close to plants? I was thinking about going with a couple 400w instead or maybe 600w's. any avice will help, thanks!

I dont know yet how many plants will be involved. I plan on a small veg room with mother plants and the rest will be used for flowering clones. I would like to harvest about once a month or even every other week. I know i have the space but dont know if the room will be high enough? Is six foot high enough or should i scratch my plans?

Defintely more smaller lights on a 5x10 floor space to get better spread. The 1000 would work but multiple smaller lights would be better for spread and you really wouldnt be utilizing the penetration of the 1000 in a SOG. Multiple smaller lights will help with you raising and loweing of them for the plants in different phases of growth if you do indeed do a perpetual grow. Different color temp bulbs could also be used with multiple lights depending on phase of the plant.

good luck

I am in exacly the same situation right now. I only have 6 six up to work with. I am also interested in doing SOG with 2 1000w lights I was worried about the space too, but now I believe that if I put them in daisy chained cool tubes, plus air condition the room, I will be fine. I don't think that multiple 4s are as good as 1000 for big buds. but I have not grown with anything that big yet. we'll see
good luck

Lots of people work with less height than that. You would need to have sealed lights to allow the plants to get closer to them.

There are many methods for making sure the plants do not get too high.

Hempy buckets eliminate the need for resevoirs underneath and SOG, SCROG, LST all deal with height limitations.

I would recommend reading the GrowFAQ about these methods to see what works for you.

or you could investigate t-5 and led lighting. You would gain a foot of usable height. Let me break that down for you a little bit. Your 'system', whatever that is, will take up some space. Lets just pretend you are doing a soil grow, I know, you can't do a sea of green soil grow stay with me here, the pot will take a foot of space. The furnace you are considering buying will take a foot of space at the least, and that is after adding cooltubes and the distance between your furnace and plant will take another foot. NOw put a hydro system in the middle of your 3' available height, and hope you are not in the whole, see what i mean?? VV
