How Much?

I smoke weed and get high. I have never experienced these different effects people speak of from sativa/indica.

If I smoke enough for long enough I get sleepy.

Not saying there isn't a difference. All I'm saying is I have never experienced it. I have been smoking weed for over 30 years

I think there are differences in the highs of the two different genotypes. Regardless of whether you call them sativa, indica, or afghan. What is commonly referred to as sativa will typically have a higher THC to CBD ratio than what is commonly referred to as indica. Some of the sativa's are known to have high levels of THCV. But you have to actually have a true strain from each genotype. Much of what's touted as sativa or indica is actually a hybrid.

I can guarantee that if you smoke an African Malawi one day and then something like a Pakistani Chitral Kush the next you will definitely be able to tell the difference. The Malawi will have a much different effect than the Kush. But they are from different genotypes. The same would be true if you smoked hemp which is also cannabis. You would get a different effect.

I even notice strongly different effects between African, Himalayan, and tropical sativas. Considering lots of African, and some Asian sativas are high in THCV, that could be one of the causes of these different effects, but I'm also confident there are a lot of other factors that we aren't even aware of yet. Just like how some strains are better for pain than others, some give me anxiety while others do not, some strains like critical mass put me to sleep in 10 min while others are super speedy. I've always noticed very strong differences between strains, especially unrelated strains.

Indica vs sativa is dying bro science. I'm not sold on the terpenes causing an entourage effect either.
If you grow enough strains/diverging genetics, you will see a difference and gravitate one way or the other. Even among hybrids, you can see a difference. For example, Elev8's sativa-dominant Gorilla Cookies are energetic/uplifting. It's noticeable. They're also very dense. Without prompting, everyone who's hit it has made similar comments -- energetic/uplifting.

Perception matters. I believe some people are acutely aware of effects/perhaps they're sensitive to them, while others will only go as far as to say that they like/prefer one strain over another.

I currently have 40 mothers.
different phenos or completely different strains? I'm not trying to be difficult, I tried out more than 20 strains (probably 30+ with the last several additions) and mostly made selections based on effects. I don't think it's bs that some strains are uplifting/energetic. They were all grown under the same/similar conditions and allowed to ripen (so not harvested too early).

Perhaps it's just the amount of THC or an individual's sensitivity to THC, but some strains definitely hit differently. And the energetic strains happen to be the hybrids that leaned the most sativa and grew with the most sativa-like characteristics.

A blend of strains / phenos. Chucked seeds have a lot of genetic variation. Those 40 plants were all born within the past year, and I've run a ton of strains since I started growing. I can't think of too many popular strains that I haven't run, or at least were in the genetic makeup of one of the strains.

Effect isn't even a consideration of mine because I've never grown a strain that didn't get me all the way high in two hits. My selection goes -- terpenes > frost > yield.
