I've never grown before & am considering trying it out in a converted cabinet in my basement. My main concern is smell. how much is one plant going to smell? If I do this I will use1 flourescent tube which I already have & I'll get LED lights. I do not want to use HID because of the noise, power consumption & heat output, I'm afraid of overloading circuits with all that power since I already have maxed out the available power in the basement with laundry, treadmill & such. I will not be able to vent to outside air so it will recirculate into the basement. do you think someone standing next to the cabinet would smell it?

You don't need an HID set up - that would be over kill. You should do well with 250 watts . Smell? There would be some smell I'm sure. What is your exact concern with smell...outside or within your home? A carbon filter would do the trick.

my concern is will it smell in the basement by the cabinet? You know repairman comes to work on the maytag, cleaning lady is down there to get cleaning supplies, wife is doing laundry, my neighbor the cop comes over to borrow my plunger. will they smell it?

I have an alpineair unit, its either an ozone generator or negative ionizer I cant recall but it does have a small carbon filter on it. I figure I'll make one (or two) of the cool tube carbon filters thats shown in the 101 questions sticky, but I probably wont use an exhaust fan on it because of the noise. Also I'll be putting it near to the catbox, gonna make the cat finally earn his keep.

thanks kitty,

any idea on the size of ozone generator needed & proximity placement? Or, would I be better off putting this in my attic? I wasn't originally doing the attic because its cold & drafty, I'm in gardening zone 5 & winters coming, ambient temps in the attic will probably be in the 40's (or even colder) soon if the aren't already

You can put your grow anywhere in the home as long as you control and maintain ideal temps 72-78 degrees during the day and no lower than 65 degrees at night. Based upon the information you gave me...I would spend the money and put the grow in the attic (out of site and out of mind), plus it is easier to get the air outside of the home fast (closer to the roof). You will not need a large industrial generator; something small and basic combined with a carbon filter.

I've got three little babies growing in my closet, they're about 17 days old in the soil, I can smell them when I come in the room that they're in, but no further yet

i had three plants stink up a three story house. carbon filter and/or ozone generator will take care of the odor (until you open the door to the cabinet). I don't think the type of light you use effects the smell (provided they grow properly). All things being equal, i believe the odor is strain dependent.
