How much time for lighting for veg??

Ok everyone Im a total newb with a few questions.

1. After Germination, sprout is planted in soil and Im curious how many hours of light do I give it daily and does it change throughout growth??

2. I know the veg state is from sprout to right before flowering, but how do I know when that is and how do I know my plant is ready for flowering?

3. Flowering (budding) is 12/12, now is it correct to stop when the white hairs turn amber (with a magnifying glass right) or what?

4. What is the fastest way to grow a healthy plant? Ive read hydroponics, soil, aero?

The fast answer is ..buy a decent growing book...like Jorge Cervantes book, ...study the way plants grow in nature and keep things simple.

Your questions are all kind of connected.

1) Veg stage is 18 hrs lights on, switch to flowering stage by reducing light to 12 hrs ....indoors, under lights, YOU decide when to flower it. Out in nature the light wanes from the summer solstice on as we go into Fall, that and drying soils send a signal to the plant that it's time to flower to make seeds to get through the winter or drought. Growing indoors you decide all these things.

2) Assuming you have sprouted a female or taken clones from a female mother, the time to flower indoors is whenever YOU decide to switch from 18 hrs to 12 hrs. Usually it'll be after the plant branches a few times or gets to a certain height. Females have 2 hairs that show up early in the crotches of the branches after they've been under 12 hour light for a little while, might need a magnifying glass to see them.

3) Yes that is true, when trichomes begin to turn amber as seen under magnification that is the time to harvest, Regardless the buds will get a certain ripe look and you'll know after seeing them a few times. Fewer and fewer white hairs will grow. No worries eh?! Just be patient and don't pick too soon, or touch them too much. More on the fingers = less in the pipe!

4) Indoors I like Hydro! Go Organic! Stay away from gimicks and urban myths. Things like Super Thrive & VF-11, & Miracle grow suck. Keep it simple, Happy gardening! GrowIT!:weed:

WOW, thanks for responding to all my connected questions haha, can you say approx how long/fast I can expect to harvest in regards to going with a hydro setup?

Hi, You're Welcome....I take a clone(actually 4), stick them in 3 inch grodan cubes in the green house dome tray to root for about 2 plus weeks and often pinch them at some point to to get them to branch. When they are 5 inches and have branched at least twice (i.e. 4 branches) I move them to the flower side of the closet.
They are there for 8 weeks usually before I harvest. I get about 1.25 ounces per plant. 5 ounces every two weeks, over half a pound per month
I take 4 clones every two weeks and follow this pattern every two weeks. So after 10 weeks total I harvest the first 4 plants...then 2 weeks later I harvest the next 4 and on and on.
I use Hydroton (expanded clay) I change my nute solutions every week, I inspect every day for insects & fungus and generally to make sure things are working. I over built the systems so it would work effortlessly when unattended.
I just get tired of harvesting so much pot...HA! TEASING!:weed: Happy Gardening! GrowIT!

How long until harvest is up to you, to a degree, and then the strain - some take longer than others. You can veg as long as you want, provided you have enough vertical space - but remember they will grow two to three times their height, once in flower. Flowering will take 45-90 days, with the tropical Sativa strains taking the longest.

Ok Are you guys all newbies lol, K dude here ya go.

1. Not 18 hours of light. 24 hours of continuos light until , if indoors, about 4 to 6 weeks before budding.

2. It is considered mature after the stems stop sprouting evenly, side by side, and they grow uneven. Where you will have on branch grow then another right above it but not next to it.

3. Correct, but you need a pocket scope. Gettem on ebay. You need at least 40x magnification to see the resins change to amber.


4. My experience, hydro is faster and maybe yeilds more, but soil is tastier and in my opinion has a better heavier stone.

Though there are many ways to the same goal, the closer to natural conditions the less stress for the plants, use 18 hrs of light. Skip the suggestion for 24, sure it works but that's cutting out the night dark cycle which is just as important to a plants health. They need it dark to click into another internal Biochemical cycle that deals with the organic compounds created during the day light hours. Sort of like breathing, they need to 'breath in' as much as they need to 'breath out', so to speak. (look up the Krebs cycle) It's stressful to plants to be forced to be in grow state 24hrs.
