How long should the tap root be before planting in rockwool

Hi

I finally have some tap roots appearing after moving my seeds from a ceramic mug to paper towels, how much taproot should be showing before I plant in the rockwool cubes.

Can anybody help please?

Thanks.

Kinda wondering why you didn't plant in the RW cube in the first place?

At this point you may have to split the rockwool cube or make the hole sufficient in size to accept the root so it is not damaged. If you have to split it you can put a rubber band around it to hold it together until it roots/mends on it's own.

I would plant when the root is 1/4" to 1/2" long. Others may say otherwise.

FLUSH the cubes ***well*** with plain water before doing any "soaking". This will help stabilize the pH in the cube.

good luck

I assume you doing Hydroponic so why did you start the seed in dirt? You can start seed in Rockwool or any size sprout or small plant.

Not long to go then if they gotta be a 1/4 to 1/2" long although 5 of them have done nothing. I was led to understand I can make a hole in the top of the roclwool cube with a match and carefully drop the seed in.

Hope this all goes well

What if the taproot is over an inch, and still alive? Is it to late to transplant? My root has grown through the rockwool cube and poked out at the bottom.

You should just soak them in h2o for 24 hours, put them in your RW, and let it go. If the tap root is that size already, just tear the cube in half (easy to do without messing it up), put the tap root down and seed coat up, put the other side of the cube on, then secure together with a strip of duct tape (all the way around) or your hydroton. Because the hydroton and RW hold h2o so well, I actually just moisten one or two times a day until it's cotyledons emerge, then run my system as normal.
