How long should a 3 gallon retain water

Everything I hear is "DON'T OVER WATER! DON'T UNDER WATER! ROOT ROT ROOT ROT!!" Well I have a good idea of how to tell when to water without causing watering stress but just up potted six plants to three gallon pots then watered them. The soil is still about as moist as when I watered and up potted about three days ago. I don't plan to water until when it needs but what is the general rule of how moist it should stay for how long?

Personally I think it'll be fine once the root system gets bigger and starts sucking up all the moisture to the plants but what I fear is the time in between.

You are on the right track.
If you can get some air moving down around the pots it wouldnt hurt.
Water usage is a "fluid" situation.
But you know that..^^^

Any info I give is based on what I would be comfortable doing.
Please get other opinions.

In nature plants don't live in plastic buckets but at my house they do or they get the f**k out.

Pick your containers up, when they get light in weight water.
or
When you leaves start to droop give them some water.

You can also water from the bottom of the container if you have a saucer.
Fill the saucer with water until the plant has absorbed what it wants. Dump the excess water from the saucer.

IMO- You further off to water a little bit each day than to water a huge amount.
It's always a good idea to pick the containers up to see if the plant are using the water your giving them.
