It will help - the cheap radioshack one does 60 to 100x magnification and works well... The trichomes will start out clear, then turn cloudy (hard to tell difference between cloudy and clear with my cheap scope). When they are ready, the trichomes will begin to turn amber (the difference between amber and clear/cloudy is obvious).

This is the scope I use from RadioShack http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2179604&cp=&sr=1&origkw=microscope&kw=microscope&parentPage=search

It all depends on how you like to get high! Listen to what everyone has said so far... its the trichomes that you want to look at, and it will determine the kind of high (in conjunction w/ strain type) you get. Somebody also brought up plant color (light green to dark green). When it goes to dark green (somewhat of a brown including shriveled up pistils) the life cycle has ended and you should chop regardless of trichome development.

Start taking close up pics of a few bud sites now... a few days later you can compare new pics to those you took earlier. You will know when your plants life cycle is ended or coming to an end by the color change that occurs to the entire plants!

Well being that it looks as if you have already removed all large leaves (fans and such), I would say that you will be harvesting soon as you really won't have much choice.. How long have they been flowering? You need a microscope so you can look at the trichs..
