How HOT is too HOT for little sprouts outside?

Hello, I have some little 4 day old sprouts in great condition sitting outside here in Florida. I have been chasing the sun to make sure that they get light all day long. However, is there such thing as too much sunlight? They look as if they are thriving so far, but the soil is very warm to the touch. I would hate to fry these guys. Should I make sure they get some shade during the day?

The plastic pot they are in is a decent size. Maybe 8" high with a diameter of 6-8".

Thanks.

Well.. how do they look? Are they burned or wilted, or showing any other signs of not responding well to the sunlight?

To keep the soil cool, you could do a couple of things, one is to sink them into the ground, or you could put them on a tray filled with pebbles then a bit of water (unless it's REALLY humid and you don't think evaporative cooling would work).. you could indeed shade them, maybe some shade cloth or landscaper's cloth, draped over the pots and some of the surrounding area so it shades the soil but not the seedlings. Maybe you could even use some other potted plants grouped around them in such a way as to provide a little shade, but not too much.

Thanks for the reply. No, they look great right now, but I worry any negative effects from the heat might be delayed in their showing up. I have them all in individual pots, so I'm moving them around the property making sure they get optimal sunlight. Maybe I'll just give them a little break from the sun so I dont cook the roots. Though, just shading the soil sounds like a great idea too.

Thanks again Seamaiden. If you ever get a chance to check out my journal for this outdoor grow, I'd really appreciate your feedback from time to time. From what I've read around the forum, it sounds like you know what the hell your talking about.

Who... me? I read as much as I can, and use what I know from other areas. I still get my ass kicked, like with my damned Papaya seeds I can't get to germinate. I have.. two more "last resort" tricks I'm going to try, and then maybe even some Superthive will do it! (something to boost that root growth, yeah?) Thank you for the compliment, though in all honesty, I just post a lot. ;)

I should put my journal into my siggie, but then RP has to go away.

Ron Paul should never go away. RP for pres in 2012! Then again, its not like a man who makes that much sense on so many issues to ever be elected to a high office. The American people would never stand for it.

Post a link to your journal so I can check it out. Or maybe I'll just stop being lazy and find it for myself...

I stuck it in my homepage linkage. Just go to my "homepage", and.. crap, now I can't remember if it's my gallery or my journal that I put in there. God dammit! :x

Shit.. and now my keyboard's acting up. I thought that might happen after I spilled a bowlful of Raisin Bran and the milk on it earlier today. :| Smells funny, too. god dammit.

It's the gallery.
K, fixed it. :D

i always ask myself that same question because people always say stuff like "90-95" is DEADLY!!!!!! But.... than how the hell does it grow outside on hot days.. Usually just sounds like people repeating what they have constantly read from other post. Cheers ya digg

I'm a little more concerned with the temp of the soil. The medium can get very hot when its in a pot out in the sun. I'm just trying to keep an eye on them and give them shade when needed. I think I'm babying these things way too much...

When I finally get these Papaya seeds going, you can bet your sweet ass I'm gonna baby 'em! They've been very temperamental, compared to the Indica varieties I've had no trouble getting going.
